Summary (1) Control of cell orientation and knowledge of the plane of sectioning are indispensable (but generally ignored) requirements for studies of the development of cellular constituents. (2) A simple technique that meets these requirements for the electron microscope is given. (3) As applied toParamecium, it is shown that the ciliary complexes of the new gullet develop outside of the old one, and that invagination begins at the anterior end of the gullet anlage.

Method for the quantitative evaluation of platelet function in blood coagulation

Zusammenfassung Eine Methode zur Auswertung der funktionellen Plättchenaktivität wird beschrieben. Isolierte Plättchen in konstanter Zahl (300000/cu.mm) werden einem alle übrigen Gerinnungsfaktoren in konstanter Menge enthaltenden Substrat zugesetzt. Prozente können von den Gerinnungszeiten durch eine Eichkurve ermittelt werden.     

Studies of the differences of osmotic pressure between the aqueous humor and the serum in some species of animals

Riassunto L'autore ha eseguito determinazioni della pressione osmotica dell'U. Acqueo e siero in alcune specie animali col metodo diNiederl e Levy. In tutte le specie animali ha riscontrato sempre un'ipertonia dell'Acqueo rispetto al siero di circa 2m/M.Soltanto nella cavia l'acqueo è leggermente ipotonico in rapporto al siero. L'autore spiega questa eccezione con la deficienza di anioni (cloruri e bicarbonati riscontrata nell'acqueo di cavia).

Identical point mutations of PMP-22 in Trembler-J mouse and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A.

We have investigated the peripheral myelin protein gene, PMP-22, in a family with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A). The DNA duplication commonly found in CMT1A was absent in this family, but strong linkage existed between the disease and the CMT1A marker VAW409R3 on chromosome 17p11.2. We found a point mutation in PMP-22 which was completely linked with the disease. The mutation, a proline for leucine substitution in the first putative transmembrane domain, is identical to that recently found in the Trembler-J mouse. The presence of this PMP-22 defect in this CMT1A family and the location of PMP-22 within the DNA duplication associated with CMT1A suggest that both structural alteration and overexpression of PMP-22 may lead to the disease.     

Deficits in social behavior in autism and their modification by a synthetic adrenocorticotrophic hormone (4–9) analog

When charting the structure of the social behavior of autistic children by means of an ethologically analyzed playroom session, deficits appeared in the reciprocity of eye-contact and in the location of verbal initiatives. These deficits in social behavior were beneficially influenced by treatment with the adrenocorticotrophic hormone (4–9) analog ORG 2766.     

Effect of the ionic strength on the kinetic properties of the mitochondrial L-malate dehydrogenase

Summary Increase of the ionic strength inhibits the catalytic activity of the mitochondrial MDH, reduces substrate inhibition and decreases the affinity of substrates for the enzyme.This work was supported by a grant from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico (CNPq), Brazil.
