Accumulation of phenylpropanoids in the rectal glands of males of the Oriental fruit fly,Dacus dorsalis

Summary Two phenylpropanoid compounds, 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol(II) and coniferyl alcohol(III), were characterized from body tissue of wild males of the Oriental fruit fly,Dacus dorsalis. These compounds accumulated in the rectal glands only when laboratory-reared males were fed with methyl eugenol. Compound II was released into the air during dusk, which coincides with the fly courtship period. Pheromonal and allomonal effects of the phenylpropanoids were examined.     

Synergistic effect of rabbit specific antiserum and amikacin on the treatment of mice with lethal infection due toKlebsiella pneumoniae

Summary A combination of rabbit specific antiserum and amikacin showed a synergistic effect on the treatment of mice with lethal infections due to a strain ofKlebsiella pneumoniae.     

Changes in dopamineβ-hydroxylase activity of monkey plasma with age

Summary Plasma dopamine -hydroxylase activity of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata) increased with age, and the developmental changes were similar to those of human beings. However, the adult level plasma DBH activity of various monkey species was much lower than that of human beings.We thank Dr.K. Nozawa, Dr.O. Takenaka and Mr.T. Shotake (Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University) for their help in collecting monkey blood samples.     

Cooperative non-specific binding of the cyclic adenosine 3'--5'-monophosphate receptor protein (CRP) from Escherichia coli to double-stranded thymus and lambda pgal DNA]

Either free or combined with cAMP, CRP binds cooperatively to double-stranded thymus and lambda pgal DNA. The affinity of CRP for both DNAs in these non-specific interactions is increased by cAMP without noticeable change in the degree of cooperativity. Values of the intrinsic association constant, cooperativity parameter, and site size of DNA were determined from ultracentrifugal investigations under near-physiological ionic conditions.     

Cultivation of arterial endothelial cells from human umbilical cord

We have developed a simple method for the isolation of endothelial cells from human umbilical artery. The method provides a sufficient number of cells to be of experimental value. The presence of factor VIII antigen specific for endothelium has been demonstrated by immunofluorescence as well as by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase immune complex method.     

The ontogenetic development of the c-wave in the chick ERG

Zusammenfassung Elektroretinographische Untersuchungen wurden in situ während des Wachstums von Küken ohne Narkose ausgeführt. Die c-Welle des ERG trat direkt vor der Ausbrüte und bei frisch geschlüpften Küken in Erscheinung.     

Effect of pulsing electromagnetic fields on DNA synthesis in mammalian cells in culture

Summary DNA synthesis in Chinese hamster V79 cells was significantly enhanced when they were exposed to weak, pulsing electromagnetic fields generated by specific combinations of the pulse width (25s), frequency (10, 100 Hz) and magnetic intensity (2×10^–5 8×10^–5T).
