Summary Approximately 180 small and mainly acrocentric chromosomes are present inGeotria australis (Geotriidae) from the southern hemisphere. This is closer to the situation found in northern hemispheric species (Petromyzonidae) than in other southern hemispheric lampreys (Mordaciidae).We wish to express our gratitude to Mr R. W. The antidiuretic activity of oxytocin (OT) was measured in Brattleboro rats with congenital diabetes insipidus. A dose dependent antidiuretic response was found in animals receiving chronic infusions of 0.1 micrograms/h, 1.0 micrograms/h, and 5 micrograms/h of OT. OT infused at the rate of 5 micrograms/h over a 7-day period completely reversed the symptoms of diabetes insipidus. The results support the concept that OT serves as a weak agonist of vasopressin at the level of the kidney and at pharmacological levels exhibits antidiuretic activity.  相似文献

Restricted recognition of beta 2-microglobulin by cytotoxic T lymphocytes   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Recognition of foreign antigen by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) is restricted by class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) products. Class I heavy chains (relative molecular mass (Mr) 45,000-48,000) are reversibly and noncovalently associated with beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M, Mr = 12,000). Cells expressing human or murine class I heavy chains can exchange their native beta 2M for exogenously added free beta 2M, which is present in serum. Two allelic forms of beta 2M exist among the common laboratory mouse strains, beta 2M-A and beta 2M-B, which are represented in BALB and C57BL mice, respectively. The two forms differ at a single amino acid at position 85, the gene (beta 2m) is located on chromosome 2 linked to a minor histocompatibility (H) region, H-3. It has been proposed that one of the H-3 loci is identical with beta 2m, and that CTL raised across certain H-3 incompatibilities are actually specific for beta 2M. Here we describe CTL raised in such a combination which recognize endogenous as well as exogenous beta 2M-B in the context of H-2Kb. This represents a unique case of CTL recognition, as CTL usually recognize antigens inserted into the membrane, and it is the first molecular identification of the product of a minor H locus.  相似文献

Iron deficiency afflicts more than three billion people worldwide, and plants are the principal source of iron in most diets. Low availability of iron often limits plant growth because iron forms insoluble ferric oxides, leaving only a small, organically complexed fraction in soil solutions. The enzyme ferric-chelate reductase is required for most plants to acquire soluble iron. Here we report the isolation of the FRO2 gene, which is expressed in iron-deficient roots of Arabidopsis. FRO2 belongs to a superfamily of flavocytochromes that transport electrons across membranes. It possesses intramembranous binding sites for haem and cytoplasmic binding sites for nucleotide cofactors that donate and transfer electrons. We show that FRO2 is allelic to the frd1 mutations that impair the activity of ferric-chelate reductase. There is a nonsense mutation within the first exon of FRO2 in frd1-1 and a missense mutation within FRO2 in frd1-3. Introduction of functional FRO2 complements the frd1-1 phenotype in transgenic plants. The isolation of FRO2 has implications for the generation of crops with improved nutritional quality and increased growth in iron-deficient soils.  相似文献

The loose material--regolith--on the surfaces of asteroids is thought to represent ballistically emplaced ejecta from impacts but the identification of source craters and the detailed study of the regolith modification have been hampered by the limited spatial resolution and area coverage of the few asteroids imaged by spacecraft. Here we report the results of global mapping of the asteroid 433 Eros from high-resolution images obtained by the NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft. Based on the images and ejecta-emplacement models, we suggest that most large ejecta blocks on Eros originate from a relatively young 7.6-km-diameter crater. A large fraction of the ejecta from impacts pre-dating that crater has apparently been buried or eroded. The images also show evidence for the action of a variety of sorting environments for regolith particles after they are deposited on the surface.  相似文献

Images returned by the spacecraft Clementine have been used to produce a quantitative illumination map of the north pole of the Moon, revealing the percentage of time that points on the surface are illuminated during the lunar day. We have used this map to identify areas that are constantly illuminated during a lunar day in summer and which may therefore be in permanent sunlight. All are located on the northern rim of Peary crater, close to the north pole. Permanently sunlit areas represent prime locations for lunar outpost sites as they have abundant solar energy, are relatively benign thermally (when compared with equatorial regions), and are close to permanently shadowed regions that may contain water ice.  相似文献
