Summary The capacity of binding copper ions of several aminoacids and peptides has been investigated. A direct colorimetric method measuring comparable values of bound Cu²⁺ has been developed.

Changes in glutamine levels during starvation and aestivation in the Indian apple snailPila globosa (Swainson)

Summary The glutamine levels in digestive gland, foot and body fluids of normal, starved and aestivatedPila globosa were estimated. Glutamine content was decreased during starvation and aestivation. The percent decrease was more during aestivation than starvation. The decrease may be due to low glutamine-synthetase activity or increased utilization for uric acid synthesis. This may have an adaptive value during aestivation and starvation.Acknowledgments. C. Sree Ramulu Chetty and P. Changes in the activities of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice due to ethanol, caffeine, or phenobarbital administration.

Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependent of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.     

Stimulus-response function at several levels of background luminance,in the cat visual areas 17 and 18

Summary Stimulus-response curves of simple cells of the visual cortex were obtained by using 500-msec stationary stimuli. Background influence on single unit responses was studied. The contrast sensitivity of simple cells increases as a function of background luminance. The resolution power of these cortical cells for detecting differences in stimulus contrast decreases at background levels above 0.09 cd/m².This investigation was supported by a grant from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome (Italy).     

(E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal: A component of the female sex pheromone of the spiny bollworm,Earias insulana (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Summary (E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal has been identified as a component of the sex pheromone of the female spiny bollworm moth,Earias insulana, by gas-chromatographic, electroantennographic and microchemical studies of abdominal tip extracts and entrained volatiles from female moths.This work was carried out under Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food licence HH 11599/139, issued under the Destructive Pests and Diseases of Plants Order 1965.     

Intermolecular and intramolecular isotope effects in the deamination of putrescine catalyzed by diamine oxidase

The enzymatic deamination of 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine) catalyzed by hog kidney diamine oxidase was studied with the aid of deuterium labeled substrates and mass spectrometry. An intermolecular deuterium isotope effect for the deamination of putrescine labeled with deuterium in all 4 alpha positions was observed to be 1.26. 1,4-Diaminobutane-1,1-d2 was synthesized and intramolecular isotope effects determined. The preference of diamine oxidase for the unlabeled alpha position was about 4 times greater than for the deuterated methylene. This work shows that intramolecular deuterium isotope effects are observable in enzyme systems other than cytochrome P-450.     

Effects of thyroidectomy on monoamine oxidase activities toward tyramine and serotonin in the circumventricular nuclei of the rat.

Following thyroidectomy, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activities toward tyramine decreased significantly by 20% in the nucleus periventricularis and the nucleus arcuatus among the 3 hypothalamic nuclei of the rat, while MAO activity toward serotonin decreased significantly by 10% only in the nucleus periventricularis. It is suggested that thyroidectomy induced selective changes on the multiple forms of MAO in the discrete circumventricular nuclei.
