The adenohypophysial hormone content of the rat pars tuberalis.

The pars tuberalis of the hypophysis was shown to contain LH, which increases after castration, TSH and a very low amount of PRL. FSH was found after castration.     

Pharmacological studies of a new analgesic,dl-erythro-1-phenyl-2-(o-chlorophenyl)-2-[4-(p-methoxybenzyl)-1-piperazinyl] ethanol dihydrochloride,in experimental animals

Summary dl-Erythro-1-phenyl-2-(o-chlorophenyl)-2-[4-(p-methoxybenzyl)-1-piperazinyl] ethanol dihydrochloride showed orally a definite analgesic activity, without producing the significant morphine-like physical dependence liability, and its analgesic potency was about a half that of codeine and far superior to aminopyrine in experimental animals.     

Inhibition of an early stage of erythropoiesis in cultures of young chick blastodisc cells byRicinus communis agglutinin 120

Summary An early pre-erythroid phase of erythropoiesis in cultures of dispersed cell suspensions prepared from primitive streak and head-fold chick blastodiscs was very sensitive to inhibition byRicinus communis agglutinin 120.This work was supported by grants from the Medical Research Council and National Research Council of Canada. The effect of chloroquine upon the developing lens

Summary Applied to the developing lens of the 14-day-old chick embryo, in organ culture conditions, chloquine prevented the elongation of the primary lens fibres, destroyed the equatorial ones and provoked vacuolisation and/or destruction in the epithelial cells.This work was supported by a grant from the office of the Chief Scientist, Ministry of Health, Israel     

The activity of sorbitol dehydrogenase in some mammalian erythrocytes

Summary The activity of sorbitol dehydrogenase was found to be high in the red blood cells of man, dog, guinea-pig and mouse and comparatively lower in those of goat, sheep, rabbit, cat and rat.     

Octopamine and proctolin mimic spontaneous membrane depolarisation inLucilia larvae

Summary Octopamine and proctolin at concentrations below 10^–8 M reversibly induce a spontaneous rhythmic depolarization which occurs in body-wall muscles ofLucilia larvae. The effect appears to be postsynaptic and mediated by receptors specific for each substance.This work was supported by NIEHS grant No. ES00814 and EPA grant No. R804345.     

Concentration of ‘available’ unesterified cholesterol in human plasma as evaluated from inhibition of hemolysis by lucensomycin

Summary The unesterified cholesterol content of plasma samples can be evaluated from the extent of inhibition of lucensomycin-induced hemolysis. The test measures, however, only the fraction of cholesterol which is available for interaction with lucensomycin, this availability being adversely affected by high phospholipid-cholesterol ratios.     

Immunosuppressive effect of a mouse placenta fraction on H-2 incompatible split heart allografts

Summary A soluble placenta fraction from mice (A.CA) mated with H-2 histoincompatible males (A/Sn) significantly prolonged the survival of heterotopic A/Sn heart transplants in A.CA recipients. No prolongation of A/Sn heart graft survival was obtained with the corresponding A.CA placenta fraction after A.CA × A.CA mating.The work was supported by the Danish Medical Research Council (Project No. 512-3088).     

Effect of alcohol ingestion on the epithelial cell population in rat small intestine

Summary Chronic administration of alcohol to well-nourished rats led to striking changes in the small intestinal cell population. The present experiments corroborate the view that alcohol is directly toxic to the small intestine.The authors wish to thank Mr.P. R. Gaspar for the technical assistance.
