Acetaldehyde oxidation inDrosophila null-mutants for alcohol dehydrogenase

Summary Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity is demonstrated in four strains ofD. melanogaster lacking active alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-null mutants). In the four strains, ALDH activities are similar to those found in a wild strain. It is concluded that ADH-null flies are able to detoxify acetaldehyde. This finding is discussed in relation with the dual function of ADH proposed recently.This work was supported by a grant from the Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC 6920) to Dr F. Garcin.     

Metabolic implications in the elevation of serum activity of intestinal alkaline phosphatase in chronic renal failure

Summary The activity of intestinal isoenzyme of serum alkaline phosphatase was evaluated in 21 non-dialyzed patients with advanced renal failure and in 52 patients on regular hemodialysis. In patients without hepatopathy, a significant inverse correlation was found between the enzyme activity and serum calcium levels. Hepatopathy was the most significant variable influencing the enzyme activity in patients on dialysis. Secondary hyperparathyroidism and a decreased rate in enzyme elimination should be assessed for the above-normal activities of intestinal ALP in serum in chronic renal failure.     

Biosynthesis of indole glucosinolates in rape seedlings under the influence of some sulphur metabolism inhibitors

Zusammenfassung Die Biosynthese von Glucobrassicin und Neoglucobrassicin, insbesondere der Einfluss von Alloxan, Natrium- und Kaliummolybedenat auf die Inkorporation von Schwefel aus Sulfat, wurde untersucht.     

Effect of imipramine on the norepinephrine and histamine-induced capillary response in the rat

Résumé Les résultats rapportés nous autorisent à postuler l'hypothèse que la norépinéphrine est un inhibiteur hormonal naturel dans les premières phases de la réaction inflammatoire et que l'imipramine et la désipramine, qui empêchent l'accumulation de la norépinéphrine dans les réserves, augmentent et prolongent l'action de la norépinéphrine sur le réseau capillaire. En aucune façon les effets de l'imipramine sur le réseau capillaire se sont montrés différents de ceux causés par la désipramine.

Speech sounds learned by sleeping newborns

It is not yet clear whether humans are able to learn while they are sleeping. Here we show that full-term human newborns can be taught to discriminate between similar vowel sounds when they are fast asleep. It is possible that such sleep training soon after birth could find application in clinical or educational situations.
