The effect of abdominal wounding on the rate of tissue regeneration

Zusammenfassung Verwundung induziert Regeneration in entfernten Stellen bei männlichen und weiblichen Kaninchcn. Dies gilt für frühe Regenerationsstadien bei männlichen Tieren, während bei Weibchen die Regenerationswirkung mindestens 49 Tage anhält. Es wird vermutet, dass es sich um hormonale Einwirkungen infolge Stress handelt.     

Effects of anoxia on excitability,refractoriness, and contractility in isolated rabbit atria

Zusammenfassung An der isolierten Kaninchenherzvorkammer verursacht Sauerstoffmangel Verminderung der diastolischen Erregbarkeit, Verlängerung der refraktären Phase sowie Herabsetzung der Kontraktionsfähigkeit. Herzmuskelflimmern wurde während dieser Anoxie nicht beobachtet. Sauerstoffzufuhr führte zu einer vollständigen Aufhebung der Anoxieauswirkung auf die absolute Refraktärperiode, zu einer teilweisen Aufhebung dieser Auswirkungen auf die Dauer der refraktären Gesamtpause, die diastolische Erregbarkeit und das Kontraktionsvermögen.     

Antigonadotrophic effect of melatonin in male lizards (Callisaurus draconoides)

Summary Results of a preliminary experiment indicate that injections of melatonin elicit testicular regression in male lizards having maximally recrudesced gonads at the outset of study.Supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (No. BMS74-04861), the American Philosophical Society (Penrose Fund), and the Biomedical Research program at Colorado State University.     

Mast cell stabilizing compound FPL 55618 reduces right ventricular hypertrophy and lung mast cell hyperplasia in chronically hypoxic rats

Summary Rats treated with chronic hypobaric hypoxia (21 days, 380 Torr) and mast cell stabilizing compund FPL 55618 had significantly less right ventricular hypertrophy and lung mast cell hyperplasia than rats subjected to chronic hypoxia alone. Right ventricular blood pressure was not reduced.Compound FPL 55618 was kindly donated by Mr P. Sheard of Fisons Ltd Pharmaceutical Division, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 OQY England.This study was supported by grants from the Medical Research Council of Canada and St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.

Concerning amino acids in human saliva

Résumé Dans les travaux de divers laboratoires on peut lire que l'acide-amino-butyrique (GABA) existe dans la salive humaine. Nos récents examens chromatographiques ont mis en évidence que cet acide avait été identifié par erreur et qu'il représente en fait l'acide-amino-valérique (DAVA), un constituant de la salive provenant de l'action bacterienne.     

Unravelling the signal-transduction network in B lymphocytes

The Alliance for Cellular Signaling has chosen the mouse B lymphocyte as a model system to understand basic principles that govern cellular signalling. Progress to that end has focused initially on establishing a reproducible experimental cell system and characterizing essential signalling responses. Although unravelling this complex network will take years, findings revealed in the interim will prove immensely useful to the scientific community at large.
