Autoradiographic study of the penetration of non-histone chromatin proteins into differentiating cells

Summary Attention has previously been drawn to a specific effect of NHCP on embryonicPleurodeles cell differentiation. With a modified NHCP labelling technique, autoradiography has revealed a cytoplasmic concentration of labelled NHCP and has not revealed any difference between homospecific and heterospecific NHCP penetration.This work has been supported financially by research grants from the C.N.R.S. Activation of neutrophils by a chemically separated but optically coupled neutrophil population undergoing respiratory burst

Neutrophils from pig blood were used as a model system to investigate the optical communication between cells. It was found that neutrophils stimulated to undergo respiratory burst can activate a second, chemically separated, but optically coupled population of neutrophils. The response of the latter was visualized as a temporary rising of their low-level chemiluminescence and an enhanced generation of superoxide radicals detected by both the reduction of ferricytochrome c and spin trapping. The results provide evidence that a long-range optical coupling of biological significance between living cells exists.     

Differential removal of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins in rat serum by solvent extraction procedures

Solvent extraction of serum and other biological fluids at an acidic pH is a convenient method to remove the insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs); however, an incomplete removal of IGFBPs can occur and this can potentially interfere with the radioimmunoassay of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). This study compared the removal of IGFBPs from normal adult rat serum and 5-day old neonatal rat serum by acid-gel filtration, and three solvent extraction methods, i.e., acid-ethanol (AE), acid-cryo-ethanol (ACE) and formic acid-acetone (FAA) treatments by western ligand blotting and slot-blotting analysis. In adult rat serum all three extraction methods removed nearly 75% of total IGFBPs present. For the neonatal serum, AE and FAA were very inefficient in eliminating the IGFBPs, while ACE was somewhat better, as it removed nearly 30% of IGFBPs. Ligand blots of extracted samples showed that IGFBPs of lower size range, 24 to 32 kDa (IGFBP-4, IGFBPs-1 and-2), were resistant to solvent extraction. Acid-gel filtration, in contrast, eliminated >95% of IGF-binding components in both sera. Determination of IGF-I concentrations in samples after gel filtration and extraction methods revealed lower IGF-I values in neonatal serum in acid extracted samples. These data caution against using solvent extractions for IGFBP removal in fetal/neonatal serum.     

Acclimatization effect on the evening fall in core temperature under the influence of two types of clothing

This paper reports the effect of acclimatization on the evening fall in core temperature under the influence of two different types of clothing. Two groups of subjects dressed in either knee-length skirts or full trousers during the daytime for the three months from April to June. To compare the circadian rhythm of core temperature, the experiments were carried out before and after the three month program of acclimatization. It was found that the subjects who had worn knee-length skirts showed lower rectal temperatures during the nighttime and a bigger amplitude of circadian rhythm in July than in March.     

Correlation of estrogen-induced uterine eosinophilia with other parameters of estrogen stimulation, produced with estradiol-17beta and estriol.

Estradiol-17beta is a stronger estrogen than estriol for the genomic response of estrogens. Estriol is a stronger estrogen than estradiol-17beta for the estrogen-induced uterine eosinophilia and the 6 h increase in the uterine wet weight.     

Histochemical localization of cholinesterases in the neural tissue of the pineal in the rhesus monkey

Summary The neural tissue of the monkey pineal contains both acetyl and butyryl cholinesterases. Acetylcholinesterase was localized in the cisternae of the nuclear membrane, rough endoplasmic reticulum, on the plasma membrane of the neurones, and on the axolemma of both non-myelinated and myelinated fibres. The enzyme was not found in the axosomatic or axo-dendritic synapses. It is therefore suggested that the pineal neurones have a cholinergic function rather than a cholinoceptive one.This study was supported by the WHO.
