Changes in the activities of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice due to ethanol, caffeine, or phenobarbital administration.

Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependent of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.

Summary The GnRH system was studied in the brain of the sole by immunocytochemistry (peroxidase-antiperoxidase method) (PAP) using antibodies to synthetic salmon GnRH (s-GnRH). Two centers containing immunoreactive cell bodies were observed in the forebrain, one located at the junction between the olfactory bulbs and the telencephalon and the other in the preoptic area. Numerous immunoreactive fibers were found, especially in the telencephalon, hypothalamus, pituitary, optic tectum and retina.     

Enhanced expression of Epstein-Barr virus early antigens by antitubulin agents in a latently infected human lymphoblastoid cell line

28 anticancer agents have been surveyed for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activating potency. Two vinca alkaloids with antitubulin activity, vinblastine (VLB) and vincristine (VCR), enhanced the expression of EBV early antigens (EA) in a latently infected human lymphoblastoid cell line (Raji), when used in combination with n-butyrate. Other antitubulin agents, colchicine, colcemid, and podophyllotoxin, had the same effect, although their effects were less than that of the potent tumor promoter, 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

Zusammenfassung Hoher Acetoacetatanteil in Leber junger Ratten wird durch Kortikosteronverabreichungin vivo am 10. Tag nach Geburt erniedrigt. Bei erwachsenen Ratten kein Hormoneinfluss. Adrenalektomie (14. Tag nach Geburt) führt zu hoher Produktion (19. Tag). Nur bei erwachsenen, nicht hungernden Ratten ist dies weniger ausgeprägt.     

The protective effect of small amounts of selenite in sublimate intoxication

Résumé L'injection de très petites quantités de sélénite de sodium, administrées simultanément ou 1 h après l'intoxication par le sublimé corrosif, en abaisse considérablement la toxicité: les rats blancs intoxiqués par une dose létale de sublime corrosif survivent sous l'effet du sélénite dans un % important et les lésions typiques des reins et d'autres organes n'apparaissent pas.

Zusammenfassung Aus den Zellen der HefeCandida lipolytica wurden Protoplasten gewonnen, die die Oxydationsfähigkeit gegenüber Hexadekan verloren haben, während diejenige gegenüber Glukose erhalten geblieben ist. Der Verlust der Fähigkeit, den Kohlenwasserstoff zu oxydieren, wird entweder durch eine Veränderung der Oberfläche der zytoplasmatischen Membran und Destruktion des an sie gebundenen Oxydationsenzyms erklärt oder dadurch, dass die Protoplasten die Fähigkeit verloren haben, Kohlenwasserstoffe in die Zelle zu transportieren.

Summary Heterotransplantation of the rat hepatoma of Zajdela into golden hamsters, mice and Chinese hamsters has induced virtually no change in the neoplasm. The host tissues have shown, however, a 1% increase in their own mitoses, which is attributed to growth stimulation by the tumor.
