In vitro digestibility was determined for 13 accessions of Kochia prostrata. Vegetative samples were collected in February and April. No significant differences in digestibility were detected due to month sampled or among accessions. The mean in vitro digestibility of the 13 accessions was 32.2% of dry matter digested. The accessional range was from 20.2 to 38.0% of dry matter digested.  相似文献

Germination results were obtained from seed stored in an open warehouse in Sanpete County, Utah, over a 15-year period for 18 shrub and 14 forb species. Seed viability was not appreciably affected for 14 species stored at least 15 years. Seed viability did, however, significantly decrease for two species stored 10 years, for five species stored 7 years, for seven species stored 5 years, for three species stored 4 years, and for one species stored only 3 years.  相似文献

Yellowstone National Park supports a small population ( Antilocapra americana ). Some individuals migrate during summer to areas characterized by reduced visibility, mixed habitat types, and a diverse predator community. Across areas selected by migratory and nonmigratory pronghorn, we documented cause-specific mortality of adults and fawns and assessed relative risk of predation by various predators. Coyotes ( Canis latrans ) accounted for 56% of adult predation and up to 79% of fawn predation. Cougars ( Puma concolor ) and wolves ( Canis lupus ) accounted for additional predation of adults, while cougars, black bears ( Ursus americanus ), and Golden Eagles ( Aquila chrysaetos ) were documented killing fawns on rare occasions. Our results suggest that even when pronghorn are in the presence of multiple predator species, coyote predation on adults and fawns may predominate for populations inhabiting shrubsteppe habitat. However, the risk of predation by sympatric predators, particularly cougars, may be high for female pronghorn selecting mixed cover types during migration or for birthing purposes. While the direct effect of wolves on overall mortality was low, wolves may indirectly influence survival rates of adult females and fawns by altering the behavior and space use of sympatric predators, particularly coyotes.  相似文献

Recent genetic and technological advances have determined a role for chromatin structure in neurodevelopment. In particular, compounding evidence has established roles for CTCF and cohesin, two elements that are central in the establishment of chromatin structure, in proper neurodevelopment and in regulation of behavior. Genetic aberrations in CTCF, and in subunits of the cohesin complex, have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in human genetic studies, and subsequent animal studies have established definitive, although sometime opposing roles, for these factors in neurodevelopment and behavior. Considering the centrality of these factors in cellular processes in general, the mechanisms through which dysregulation of CTCF and cohesin leads specifically to neurological phenotypes is intriguing, although poorly understood. The connection between CTCF, cohesin, chromatin structure, and behavior is likely to be one of the next frontiers in our understanding of the development of behavior in general, and neurodevelopmental disorders in particular.  相似文献

Although there has been much success in identifying genetic variants associated with common diseases using genome-wide association studies (GWAS), it has been difficult to demonstrate which variants are causal and what role they have in disease. Moreover, the modest contribution that these variants make to disease risk has raised questions regarding their medical relevance. Here we have investigated a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the TNFRSF1A gene, that encodes tumour necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), which was discovered through GWAS to be associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), but not with other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and Crohn’s disease. By analysing MS GWAS data in conjunction with the 1000 Genomes Project data we provide genetic evidence that strongly implicates this SNP, rs1800693, as the causal variant in the TNFRSF1A region. We further substantiate this through functional studies showing that the MS risk allele directs expression of a novel, soluble form of TNFR1 that can block TNF. Importantly, TNF-blocking drugs can promote onset or exacerbation of MS, but they have proven highly efficacious in the treatment of autoimmune diseases for which there is no association with rs1800693. This indicates that the clinical experience with these drugs parallels the disease association of rs1800693, and that the MS-associated TNFR1 variant mimics the effect of TNF-blocking drugs. Hence, our study demonstrates that clinical practice can be informed by comparing GWAS across common autoimmune diseases and by investigating the functional consequences of the disease-associated genetic variation.  相似文献

Much of our knowledge of galaxies comes from analysing the radiation emitted by their stars, which depends on the present number of each type of star in the galaxy. The present number depends on the stellar initial mass function (IMF), which describes the distribution of stellar masses when the population formed, and knowledge of it is critical to almost every aspect of galaxy evolution. More than 50 years after the first IMF determination, no consensus has emerged on whether it is universal among different types of galaxies. Previous studies indicated that the IMF and the dark matter fraction in galaxy centres cannot both be universal, but they could not convincingly discriminate between the two possibilities. Only recently were indications found that massive elliptical galaxies may not have the same IMF as the Milky Way. Here we report a study of the two-dimensional stellar kinematics for the large representative ATLAS(3D) sample of nearby early-type galaxies spanning two orders of magnitude in stellar mass, using detailed dynamical models. We find a strong systematic variation in IMF in early-type galaxies as a function of their stellar mass-to-light ratios, producing differences of a factor of up to three in galactic stellar mass. This implies that a galaxy's IMF depends intimately on the galaxy's formation history.  相似文献

Nova outbursts take place in binary star systems comprising a white dwarf and either a low-mass Sun-like star or, as in the case of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, a red giant. Although the cause of these outbursts is known to be thermonuclear explosion of matter transferred from the companion onto the surface of the white dwarf, models of the previous (1985) outburst of RS Ophiuchi failed to adequately fit the X-ray evolution and there was controversy over a single-epoch high-resolution radio image, which suggested that the remnant was bipolar rather than spherical as modelled. Here we report the detection of spatially resolved structure in RS Ophiuchi from two weeks after its 12 February 2006 outburst. We track an expanding shock wave as it sweeps through the red giant wind, producing a remnant similar to that of a type II supernova but evolving over months rather than millennia. As in supernova remnants, the radio emission is non-thermal (synchrotron emission), but asymmetries and multiple emission components clearly demonstrate that contrary to the assumptions of spherical symmetry in models of the 1985 explosion, the ejection is jet-like, collimated by the central binary whose orientation on the sky can be determined from these observations.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die 2 schnell sedimentierende Komponenten, isoliert aus Kaninchensamenflüssigkeit von verschiedenen Zonen eines unterbrochenen Sucrosegradienten in elektronenmikroskopischen Aufnahmen vesikuläre Strukturen darstellen. Die langsamer sedimentierende Komponente (85S) hat einen kleineren Durchmesser (507 Å) und ist weniger dicht (1.16 g/cm3) als die schneller sedimentierende Komponente mit einem durchschnittlichen Durchmesser von 609 Å und einer Dichte von 1.20 g/cm3. Die Dekapazitationsaktivität in Samenflüssigkeit kommt beiden zu und nicht nur wie bis jetzt angenommen wurde, der 85S Komponente. Zwei verschiedene Vesikeltypen wurden auch in der Samenflüssigkeit von Mensch und Stier gefunden.  相似文献
