Pineal-related changes in cyclic AMP levels of rat medial basal hypothalamus

Summary Pinealectomy (Px) in adult male rats resulted in increased cyclic AMP accumulation by medial basal hypothalamic (MBH) explants 3 and 7 days after surgery. 24 h after superior cervical ganglionectomy (Gx) an augmented MBH cyclic AMP accumulation was observed. The effects of Px and Gx were additive, as revealed in animals subjected to Gx 3 days after Px.This study was supported by grants from the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) (N^o 6638) and from the Fundación Alberto J. Evaluation of monoaminergic receptors in the genetically epilepsy prone rat

Summary The intensity of sound-induced convulsions in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) was reduced in a dose related fashion by intracerebroventricular administration of dobutamine, (₁ agonist), terbutaline (₂ agonist) or phenylephrine (₁ agonist). BHT-920 (₂ agonist) did not cause a dose-related decrease in sound-induced convulsion intensity. Binding studies showed that whole brain and receptor densities (B_max) were normal while the K_d was increased for the ligand in GEPR brain.Acknowledgment. Physiological state of submitochondrial particles and their susceptibility to Triton X-100

Summary The solubilizing effect of Triton X-100 on beef heart submitochondrial particles (ETP_H) has been studied under various physiological conditions. Coupled, uncoupled and azide-inhibited ETP_H particles have been studied. Quantitative and qualitative differences are found in the proteins solubilized by the detergent from ETP_H particles under the various conditions tested.Acknowledgments: This work was supported in part by a grant from a Spanish Comisión Asesora para la Investigación Cientifica y Técnica. Secreted oleanolic acid on the cuticleOlea europaea (Oleaceae); a chemical barrier to fungal attack

Summary The leaf of the bitter oliveOlea europaea (Oleaceae) is heavily coated by almost pure oleanolic acid, which forms part of a multichemical defense against fungal attack.We thank Mr K. A. Hoelmer for taking the electron micrographs and also Professor T. Kamikawa for NMR measurements.     

Increased susceptibility ofTrypanosoma lewisi infected,or decomplemented rats toSalmonella typhimurium

Summary Rats infected withTrypanosoma lewisi or decomplemented by injection of cobra venom factor or complement activating factor of trypanosomes were found to be more susceptible to infection withSalmonella typhimurium. Decomplemented rats subsequently infected withT. lewisi developed higher blood parasitemia than did normalT. lewisi infected rats.This project is supported by the National Research Council of Canada grant A 0068 and a grant from the International Development Research Center.     

Experimental immunity against trypanosomiasis

Summary 9 groups of 6 female rats were used in an experiment using fraction 3 ofTrypanosoma rhodesiense. 500 g gave 100% immunoprotection and 1000 and 1500 g gave 66% immunoprotection when challenged with 5×10² T. brucei. 2 groups of 10 female rats were tested for a short period inoculation immune response. In this, 750 g of fraction 3 ofT. rhodesiense gave 70% immunoprotection when challenged withT. brucei.I thank the University of Zambia for support; Dr M. A. Q. An assessment of the effect of hormone and neurotransmitters on adenine and gluanine derivatives simultaneously in rat brain cortical slices

Summary A 2-dimensional thin-layer method has been developed for the separation on cellulose of adenine and guanine derivatives. Using incubated rat cerebral cortex slices it was shown that noradrenaline and acetylcholine stirnulated cAMP and cGMP production respectively but glutamate and -aminobutyric acid stimulated production of both cyclic nucleotides.     

Oxygen consumption of hibernating worker ants Dolichoderus quadripunctatus as a function of temperature and level of population]

The oxygen consumption of "hibernating" ants shows a grouping effect translated by a significant decrease in the level of oxygen consumption as a function of grouping effect. The general relation between oxygen consumption and the living body mass is the same, if the living material belongs to a single animal, or a social community of ants.
