Prognosis of residual coal gas capacity made by the ‘Express’ method

An easy, reliable, and inexpensive method, called ‘Express’ method, was described to determine the residual gas capacity of deep mines using results from an air and gas balance. Air and gas balances are common elements of mine management and must be performed periodically. Using the process described here to obtain balance results, it is straightforward to obtain the residual gas capacity, which is an important parameter for decision-making in current mine operations. After a mine is closed, the residual gas capacity becomes a dominant factor used to select methods to protect against gas emissions from the closed underground area or perhaps to provide information for the use of gas reserves. The proposed ‘Express’ method is a much simpler method to obtain the residual gas capacity than other procedures used for this purpose to date.

Summary A new synthesis is described of a crystalline 7-methyl-doisynolic acid showing a strong estrogenic activity. This acid is probably identical with the stereoisomer C ofAnner andMiescher. Demethylation of this methoxyacid yields a new doisynolic acid of mp. 113–117° (hemihydrate).

Toxicity of statins on rat skeletal muscle mitochondria

We investigated mitochondrial toxicity of four lipophilic stains (cerivastatin, fluvastatin, atorvastatin, simvastatin) and one hydrophilic statin (pravastatin). In L6 cells (rat skeletal muscle cell line), the four lipophilic statins (100 micromol/l) induced death in 27-49% of the cells. Pravastatin was not toxic up to 1 mmol/l. Cerivastatin, fluvastatin and atorvastatin (100 micromol/l) decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential by 49-65%, whereas simvastatin and pravastatin were less toxic. In isolated rat skeletal muscle mitochondria, all statins, except pravastatin, decreased glutamate-driven state 3 respiration and respiratory control ratio. Beta-oxidation was decreased by 88-96% in the presence of 100 micromol/l of the lipophilic statins, but only at higher concentrations by pravastatin. Mitochondrial swelling, cytochrome c release and DNA fragmentation was induced in L6 cells by the four lipophilic statins, but not by pravastatin. Lipophilic statins impair the function of skeletal muscle mitochondria, whereas the hydrophilic pravastatin is significantly less toxic.

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass eine langfristige Zufuhr von Arsen in Trinkwasser bei Mäusen eine wesentliche Abnahme des Sauerstoffverbrauches des Leberhomogenates hervorruft. Die chronische Verabreichung von niedrigen Arsengaben blockiert die respirationshemmende Wirkung von Arsen in vitro, was wahrscheinlich auf eine Adaptation des Organismus zurückzuführen ist.

Zusammenfassung Thallium ist am isolierten Forschherz und M. rectus abdominis von kaliumähnlicher Wirkung. Es setzt das mit kaliumfreier Lösung in Stillstand gebrachte Froschherz in Bewegung, bei erhöhter Konzentration führt es zum Herzstillstand. Am rectus-Muskel verursacht Thallium eine Kontraktur. Seine Aktivität am Froschherz übertrifft jene von Kalium, während am isolierten rectus-Muskel ihre Aktivität gleichwertig ist.

Zusammenfassung Täglich lokal verabreichte eiweissfreie Fraktionen des hypothalamischen Extraktes zu adenohypophysären Autotransplantaten in die vordere Augenkammer hypophysektomierter Ratten hemmte die Schilddrüseninvolution und stimulierte möglicherweise den Vorgang bei Nebenniere, Hoden und Samenbläschen.     

Effect of human serum oxytocinase on the antidiuretic action of lysine vasopressin and oxytocin in the rat

Zusammenfassung Nach i.v. Dauerinfusion von Lysin-Vasopressin oder Oxytocin wird bei der experimentellen Analyse der Wirkung menschlicher Oxytocinase eine Erniedrigung des antidiuretischen Effekts gefunden; diese rührt vom Absinken der Peptidkonzentration sowohl im Blutplasma als auch am Wirkort her.     

Cytoplasmic contaminants in Triton X-100 washed rat liver nuclei - a possible way of further purification.

The presence of cytoplasmic contaminants is demonstrated in preparations of rat liver nuclei, even after washing with Triton X-100. They can be removed by incubation at 37 degrees C in a medium of low-salt concentration.
