Electro-osmotic and iontophoretic release of noradrenaline from micropipettes

Summary The relative contributions of electro-osmosis and iontophoresis to the electrophoretic release of noradrenaline from micropipettes were examined. Electro-osmosis was responsible for 23.1% (±5.0%) of the total rate of release.This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust. We are grateful to Dr M.N. Jones for his help. Immunohistochemical localization fo galactocerebroside in kidney,liver, and lung of golden hamster

Summary Localization of galactocerebroside in kidney, liver, and lung of hamster was studied by the immunoperoxidase method using an affinity-purified specific antibody. Epithelial cells of the following anatomical sites were labelled with the antibody: distal tubuli, ascending limbs of Henle's loops, and collecting tubuli in kidney; periportal bile ducts and hepatic parenchyma in liver; bronchioli and alveoli in lung. The existence of galactocerebroside in these 3 organs was also confirmed by chemical analysis.This study was supported in part by grants from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan, a Research Grant for Intractable Diseases from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan, and a grant from the Mitsubishi Foundation.     

Permeability of fresh and stored human erthrocytes to glycerol and its acylated derivatives

The effect of copper ions on the permeation of glycerol and its mono-, di-, and triacetate derivatives was studied in fresh and stored erythrocytes. Permeability was unchanged with storage. Acylated glycerols permeate the cells mainly by non-facilitated mechanism, as their transport is almost unaffected by copper ions.     

Innervation by W-type retinal ganglion cells of superior colliculus neurons projecting to pulvinar nuclei in cats.

Neurons of the cat superior colliculus (SC) sending their axons to the pulvinar nuclei were identified electrophysiologically as the ones responding antidromically to electrical stimulation of the pulvinar nuclei. They were located in the superficial layers of SC and found to be innervated by axons of W-type ganglion cells of the retina.     

Intraventricular administration of isoproterenol inhibits both heat production and heat loss mechanisms in rats

Summary At an ambient temperature (T_a) of 8°C, intraventricular administration of isoproterenol inhibited metabolic heat production and led to hypothermia in rats. In contrast, at a T_a of 22°C and of 30°C, isoproterenol decreased cutaneous circulation and led to hyperthermia. The data indicate that isoproterenol inhibits both heat production and heat loss mechanisms in rats.This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Council of the Republic of China. Mouse egg cylinders developed in vitro may form benign and malignant teratoid tumors

Summary Egg cylinders developed in vitro from explanted mouse blastocysts were transplanted under the kidney capsules of adult mice to assess their developmental potential. In vitro grown egg cylinders are capable of differentiation into somatic tissues and may give rise to stem cells of teratocarcinoma like the developmentally equivalent 7 day mouse embryos grown in vivo.
