Does an Old Art Suffice for New Problems?

In this review I argue that Puech draws on two important currents in modern thought: the criticism of the ontological and social priority of conflict, and the rehabilitation of praxis vis-à-vis theoria. Still, his plea for a non-confrontational art of living leaves important questions unanswered. What is the problem exactly? What does exactly count as (non)confrontational? What is non-confrontation exactly meant to solve? What is the antiposition here? And: how does this new (or rather: old) art of living relate to the political and ethical varieties of Technology Assessment?     

Gene polymorphism in Netherton and common atopic disease.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and asthma are characterized by IgE-mediated atopic (allergic) responses to common proteins (allergens), many of which are proteinases. Loci influencing atopy have been localized to a number of chromosomal regions, including the chromosome 5q31 cytokine cluster. Netherton disease is a rare recessive skin disorder in which atopy is a universal accompaniment. The gene underlying Netherton disease (SPINK5) encodes a 15-domain serine proteinase inhibitor (LEKTI) which is expressed in epithelial and mucosal surfaces and in the thymus. We have identified six coding polymorphisms in SPINK5 (Table 1) and found that a Glu420-->Lys variant shows significant association with atopy and AD in two independent panels of families. Our results implicate a previously unrecognized pathway for the development of common allergic illnesses.     

Pigment granules in choroidal melanophores of the albino goldfish.

Pigment granules in choroidal melanophores of the albino goldfish contained fine particulate materials which were in various degrees aggregated in clumps. Tyrosinase was considered to be present in an inhibited state in these pigment granules.     

Lipoprotein lipase activator deficiency in very low density lipoproteins in rat nephrotic syndrome.

Marked urinary loss of lipoprotein lipase activator in experimental rat nephrotic syndrome may be partly responsible for its deficiency in plasma very low density lipoproteins.     

The effect of glycine on serum luteinizing hormone in adult female rats

The response of serum luteinizing hormone to glycine has been studied during the estrous cycle in adult female rats. I.p. administration of 200 mg of glycine significantly elevated serum luteinizing hormone levels at all stages of the estrous cycle.     

Quantitative studies on in vitro transformation of hamster chondrocytes.

Hamster chondrocytes could be transformed in a quantitative assay system which used X-irradiated feeder layer cells. Morphological transformation occurred on addition of, 4NQO, but not in control cultures. Differentiation was classified into 3 types (good, poor and none); normal and transformed colonies contained similar proportions of the 3 types.     

Effect of electroconvulsive treatment on serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity in man

The activity of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase was measured in the serum before and immediately after electroconvulsive treatments. No significant difference was observed, suggesting that the seizures did not cause an increase in the peripheral sympathetic tone.     

Inhibition of E coli ATPase activity by a troponin component, TN-I, and by mitochondrial ATPase inhibitor.

The enzymic activity of Mg2+- or Ca2+-stimulated ATPase from Escherichia coli was inhibited by one of the troponin components, TN-I, and by mitochondrial ATPase inhibitor (F1-inhibitor). The inhibitory ability of component TN-I against Mg2+-stimulated AtPase activity was lost after digestion of component TN-I with trypsin. The Mg2+-stimulated ATPase activity inhibited by component TN-I was completely restored by the addition of another troponin component TN-C.
