Summary Schistosomiasis control currently relies primarily on chemotherapy which is both expensive and temporary. There is an urgent need for an effective vaccine. Studies in animal models and man have demonstrated the existence of protective immunity. Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity mechanisms involving eosinophils and macrophages have been implemented in destruction of the parasites. Antigens expressed on the surface of the schistosomulum are among the targets of protective immune responses. Vaccines comprising recombinant antigens are now being tested in vivo for their capacity to evoke protective responses. Live oral vaccines based on attenuatedSalmonella expressing schistosomular surface antigens are being developed. 相似文献

Restriction enzyme cleavage sites of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the Mediterranean fruit fly were found to vary among introduced populations in the Neotropics. The survey included samples from 15 established natural populations and 5 laboratory cultures from Hawaii, Central America, South America and West Africa and samples from recent California infestations (1989, 1991). Based on restriction fragment length polymorphisms from 2 enzymes, Hawaii is an unlikely source for the 1989 and 1991 California infestations. Interpopulational variation in mtDNA demonstrates the potential for the technique to trace the process of colonization (geographic spread) by this insect. 相似文献

We have investigated the peripheral myelin protein gene, PMP-22, in a family with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A). The DNA duplication commonly found in CMT1A was absent in this family, but strong linkage existed between the disease and the CMT1A marker VAW409R3 on chromosome 17p11.2. We found a point mutation in PMP-22 which was completely linked with the disease. The mutation, a proline for leucine substitution in the first putative transmembrane domain, is identical to that recently found in the Trembler-J mouse. The presence of this PMP-22 defect in this CMT1A family and the location of PMP-22 within the DNA duplication associated with CMT1A suggest that both structural alteration and overexpression of PMP-22 may lead to the disease. 相似文献

Several techniques are given for the uniform generation of trees for use in Monte Carlo studies of clustering and tree representations. First, general strategies are reviewed for random selection from a set of combinatorial objects with special emphasis on two that use random mapping operations. Theorems are given on how the number of such objects in the set (e.g., whether the number is prime) affects which strategies can be used. Based on these results, methods are presented for the random generation of six types of binary unordered trees. Three types of labeling and both rooted and unrooted forms are considered. Presentation of each method includes the theory of the method, the generation algorithm, an analysis of its computational complexity and comments on the distribution of trees over which it samples.
