Bovine pituitary intraglandular colloid fraction F5 localized in the rat endocrine pancreas

Bovine pituitary intraglandular colloid thought to be a waste product, is the holocrine secretion of intermediate lobe cells. It is housed in the intraglandular lumen (residual lumen) and is extruded into the venous circulation of the cavernous sinuses via clefts in the capsule of the gland aligned with the intraglandular lumen. Intraglandular colloid, fraction F5 (mol.wt 34,000), radiolabeled with (125I)Na and injected (0.15 ml) into the right internal jugular vein of male Wistar rats, accumulated in the endocrine pancreas. Autoradiographs showed that the material had specifically localized in the capillary network of the endocrine pancreas. Since the intermediate lobe is poorly vascularized, intraglandular colloid is considered to be the transport medium for intermediate lobe materials.     

Hormonal manipulation of carrageenin-induced pyresis in rats

Summary The intensity of the hyperthermic response in rats promoted by subplantar injection of 1 mg of carrageenin is directly related to the irritant properties of the type of carrageenin. The overall pyretic response is more dramatic in female rats than in male rats. Subtle changes in the time-course hyperthermic profiles are seen after hormonal modifications.This work was supported by NIH, MBS research grant No. RR08111.     

Affinity chromatography of monoamine oxidase

The staphylocoagulase family of zymogen activator and adhesion proteins

Staphylocoagulase (SC) secreted by Staphylococcus aureus is a potent non-proteolytic activator of the blood coagulation zymogen prothrombin and the prototype of a newly established zymogen activator and adhesion protein (ZAAP) family. The conformationally activated SC·prothrombin complex specifically cleaves fibrinogen to fibrin, which propagates the growth of bacteria-fibrin-platelet vegetations in acute bacterial endocarditis. Our recent 2.2 Å X-ray crystal structures of an active SC fragment [SC(1-325)] bound to the prothrombin zymogen catalytic domain, prethrombin 2, demonstrated that SC(1-325) represents a new type of non-proteolytic activator with a unique fold. The observed insertion of the SC(1-325) N-terminus into the Ile 16 cleft of prethrombin 2, which triggers the activating conformational change, provided the first unambiguous structural evidence for the molecular sexuality mechanism of non-proteolytic zymogen activation. Based on the SC(1-325) fold, a new family of bifunctional zymogen activator and adhesion proteins was identified that possess N-terminal domains homologous to SC(1-325) and C-terminal domains that mediate adhesion to plasma or extracellular matrix proteins. Further investigation of the ZAAP family may lead to new insights into the mechanisms of bacterial factors that hijack zymogens of the human blood coagulation and fibrinolytic systems to promote and disseminate endocarditis and other infectious diseases.Received 30 June 2004; received after revision 28 July 2004; accepted 4 August 2004     

A medium to demonstrate the ligninolytic activity of some fungi

Zusammenfassung Es wird hier eine neue Methode angeführt, um die holzauflösende Fähigkeit einiger Pilze zu bestimmen. Ein milchiges, homogenes Agarmedium wird hergestellt, indem man kugelgemahlenes Buchensägemehl als hauptsächliche Kohlenstoffquelle benutzt. Wenn man in dieses Medium bestimmte holzzerstörende Pilze einpflanzt, wird sowohl ihre holzspaltende als auch ihre zellulosezerstörende Wirkung dadurch gezeigt, dass das Medium unter dem Wurzelgeflecht sich aufklärt.

Résumé En comparant les diagrammes d'électrophorèse en gels d'amidon de gliadine obtenus à partir d'un blé hexaploïde, d'un seigle diploïde et de blé + seigle amphiploïdes avec les lignes d'additionnement des chromosomes blé-seigle on constata qu'un chromosome de seigle contrôle toutes les gliadines du seigle.     

Strain difference in sex ratio response of mice to lactate dehydrogenase virus infection

Zusammenfassung Durch Infektion mit LDH-Virus wird bei Mäusen, deren Nachkommen normalerweise ein Geschlechtsverhältnis <1 aufweisen, ein solches von 1 erreicht. Da sich die Infektion der Eltern beider Stämme nicht in einer unterschiedlichen Zunahme der Serum-LDH, wohl aber in einer solchen der Spermien-LDH auswirkt, wird angenommen, dass die LDH-Aktivität der Spermien sich in einer zwar noch unbekannten Weise auf das Geschlechtsverhältnis der Nachkommen auswirkt.
