The aim of the present investigation was to look for the mechanisms causing disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism during the action of the epileptogenic agent methionine sulfoximine. The levels of glucose, glycogen, and indolamines were measured in seven different regions of rat brain. Methionine sulfoximine induced a decrease in serotonin level which was roughly dose-dependent. There were no obvious changes in tryptophan and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic levels in any area. Methionine sulfoximine induced the known increase in glucose and glycogen levels. The direct precursor of serotonin. 5-hydroxytryptophan, and benserazide (a decarboxylase inhibitor) were then injected into rats in association with methionine sulfoximine. In this case, methionine sulfoximine failed to induce seizures. Moreover, the serotonin level was unchanged and the carbohydrate content did not significantly increase. There was only a rise in 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid level. This work shows a striking parallelism between serotonin decrease and glycogen increase.  相似文献

Summary Contractions produced by endothelin-1 (0.3–30 nM) have been investigated in aorta, renal arteries and mesenteric arteries from 2- and 24-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats. In senescent rats the EC50 values of endothelin-1 for aorta and renal artery were significantly increased (aorta: from 6.2 to 12 nM; renal artery: from 5.2 to 7.8 nM). For mesenteric artery the EC50 value (4.3 nM) was unchanged by aging, whereas the maximal contractile response to endothelin-1 was enhanced (from 8.3 to 11.7 mN). In contrast, there was no significant age-related difference in the maximal endothelin-1 response of aorta and renal artery. The present data demonstrate a reduced sensitivity for aorta and renal artery and an enhanced maximal response to endothelin-1 in the mesenteric artery in senescent rats.  相似文献

Summary Neutral free D-amino acid contents in the serum, kidney, liver, brain, small intestine and urine in germ-free mice and those in specific pathogen-free mice were compared. No significant difference was found. This strongly suggests that the free D-amino acids which were shown to be present in mice in our previous work1, 2 did not originate from the enteric microbial flora.  相似文献

Moderate cooling (from 37 degrees to 24 degrees C) depressed the formation of 3H-dopamine and 3H-norepinephrine from 3H-tyrosine by isolated canine saphenous veins. Cooling reduced the evoked release of newly synthesized catecholamine to the same extent as that of stored norepinephrine. Hence the augmentation by cold of the contractile response to sympathetic nerve stimulation observed in earlier work is not accompanied by an augmented release of newly synthesized norepinephrine.  相似文献

A theory of sexuality and polymorphism is proposed in which diversity at the molecular level is the adaptive response of multicellular organisms to the challenge of microparasites that have smaller genomes, shorter generation times and which can evolve more quickly than their hosts. The theory has implications for genetically homogenized crops and other cultivated plants as well as for immunology. A different function of sexuality is proposed for microorganisms that reproduce both asexually and sexually. Several possible experimental tests are discussed. Mathematical modelling techniques are outlined qualitatively and compared with game-theoretical methods which may be interpreted as simplifications of population dynamics of polymorphic host-parasite populations are referenced.  相似文献

Summary N-cadherin was identified as a glycoprotein present in the fiber cell membranes of frog, chick, bovine, rabbit and human lenses. The molecular size of N-cadherin varies with the species. Homogenization of the chick lens in the presence of Ca2+ resulted in a decrease in the concentration of N-cadherin. This suggests that the lens contains a Ca2+-activated protease which can act on N-cadherin.  相似文献

Sulfhydryl compounds such as reduced glutathione, cysteine and 2-mercaptopropionylglycine, a hepato-protective agent, activated Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase purified from rat liver at low concentrations (below 10 microM). Furthermore we found evidence indicating that this activation is achieved by reducing Cu2+ present in the catalytic site of the dismutase, and thereby promoting the dismutation of superoxide anions.  相似文献
