The oceanic calanoid copepod family Heterorhabdidae is unique in that it comprises both particle-feeding and carnivorous genera with some intermediate taxa. Both morphological and molecular (nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA) phylogenetic analyses of the family suggest that an evolutionary switch in feeding strategy, from transitions of typical particle-feeding through some intermediate modes to sophisticated carnivory, might have occurred with the development of a specially designed ‘poison’ injection system. In view of the small amount of genetic differentiation among genera in this family, the switching of feeding modes and re-colonization from deep to shallow waters might have occurred over a short geological period since the Middle to Late Miocene.  相似文献

Compact lasers that can produce a range of beam patterns are important for progress in several areas, including the improvement of optical tweezers, ultra-high-density optical memory and microfluidics. Here we engineer photonic crystals to generate semiconductor lasers that produce a range of beam patterns while maintaining stable single-mode oscillation. Our results could contribute to the realization of compact lasers that are capable of producing diverse beam patterns on demand.  相似文献

Within a few minutes of perspiration, the colourless, viscous sweat of the hippopotamus gradually turns red, and then brown as the pigment polymerizes. Here we isolate and characterize the pigments responsible for this colour reaction. The unstable red and orange pigments turn out to be non-benzenoid aromatic compounds that are unexpectedly acidic and have antibiotic as well as sunscreen activity.  相似文献

We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of Kawasaki disease in Japanese subjects using data from 428 individuals with Kawasaki disease (cases) and 3,379 controls genotyped at 473,803 SNPs. We validated the association results in two independent replication panels totaling 754 cases and 947 controls. We observed significant associations in the FAM167A-BLK region at 8p22-23 (rs2254546, P = 8.2 × 10(-21)), in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region at 6p21.3 (rs2857151, P = 4.6 × 10(-11)) and in the CD40 region at 20q13 (rs4813003, P = 4.8 × 10(-8)). We also replicated the association of a functional SNP of FCGR2A (rs1801274, P = 1.6 × 10(-6)) identified in a recently reported GWAS of Kawasaki disease. Our findings provide new insights into the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of Kawasaki disease.  相似文献

By exome sequencing, we found de novo SMARCB1 mutations in two of five individuals with typical Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), a rare autosomal dominant anomaly syndrome. As SMARCB1 encodes a subunit of the SWItch/Sucrose NonFermenting (SWI/SNF) complex, we screened 15 other genes encoding subunits of this complex in 23 individuals with CSS. Twenty affected individuals (87%) each had a germline mutation in one of six SWI/SNF subunit genes, including SMARCB1, SMARCA4, SMARCA2, SMARCE1, ARID1A and ARID1B.  相似文献

Summary The Ca2+-releasing action of several derivatives of eudistomin D isolated from a marine tunicate was compared with that of caffeine. It was found that 9-methyl-7-bromoeudistomin D was approximately 1000 times more potent than caffeine in causing Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.The authors thank Ms A. The Src family of protein tyrosine kinases (Src-PTKs) is important in the regulation of growth and differentiation of eukaryotic cells. The activity of Src-PTKs in cells of different types is negatively controlled by Csk, which specifically phosphorylates a conserved regulatory tyrosine residue at the carboxy-terminal tail of the Src-PTKs. Csk is mainly cytoplasmic and Src-PTKs are predominantly membrane-associated. This raises a question about the mechanism of interaction between these enzymes. Here we present Cbp--a transmembrane phosphoprotein that is ubiquitously expressed and binds specifically to the SH2 domain of Csk. Cbp is involved in the membrane localization of Csk and in the Csk-mediated inhibition of c-Src. In the plasma membrane Cbp is exclusively localized in the GM1 ganglioside-enriched detergent-insoluble membrane domain, which is important in receptor-mediated signalling. These findings reveal Cbp as a new component of the regulatory mechanism controlling the activity of membrane-associated Src-PTKs.  相似文献
