Preliminary studies on the metabolism of vacuolated cells following hypoxia

Riassunto È stato studiato il metabolismo ossidativo di fette di fegato di ratto in degenerazione vacuolare da ipossia. Si è rilevata una diminuzione del quoziente respiratorio, mentre il consumo globale di ossigeno, senza substrati o in presenza di ottanoato o di succinato, rimane invariato. Nei fegati degli animali tenuti in ipossia si ha diminuzione del P labile (ATP, ADP) e dei P totali.     

Atrofia del testicolo prodotta dal monofluoroacetato sodico nel ratto albino

Summary The lesions caused by sodium monofluoroacetate on the testis of the albino rat are described. They consist of regressive modifications of the seminiferous tubules which initially cause damage to the intermediate stages and only later to the spermatogonia. The action of sodium monofluoroacetate is similar to that of fluoroacetamide.     

A direct progesterone radioimmunoassay

Résumé Exposé d'une méthode de radioimmunoassai du progestérone dans le plasma sans purification chromatographique. Le 11-hémisuccinate de la progestérone a été joint au sérum bovin de l'albumine et injecté aux lapins pour stimuler la production d'anticorps. Des échantillons de plasma humain, extraits avec de l'éther, sont ajoutés à des quantités données de 1,2-H³-progestérone. Les résultats avec ou sans chromatographie sont comparables. La méthode est précise et très sensible pour mesurer les niveaux peu élevés de progestérone humaine.     

Chromosome secondary constrictions in different stages of development

Zusammenfassung In den Metaphasen von embryonalen und neugeborenen Amphibien, Reptilien und Säugern wurde eine grössere Anzahl von Satelliten und anderen sekundären Strukturen beobachted als in solchen von ausgewachsenen Tieren. Dies kann bedingt sein durch eine grössere Anzahl von Cistronen der rDNS, die sich aktiv in den Zellen junger Tiere befinden.

Effect of the administration of xanthine on the appearance of xanthine oxidase activity in the liver of growing rats

Riassunto La somministrazione di xantina a ratti di età compresa fra i 12 e i 30 giorni, causa una precoce comparsa di attività xantinossidasica. Tale comparsa è influenzata dalla cycloheximide ma non dal cortisone nè dalla attinomicina D.     

Changing economic and social roles: the experience of four cohorts of mid-life individuals in Britain, 1985-2000

Men and women in Great Britain are increasingly involved in a variety of economic and social roles, particularly during their mid-life period. This article examines the changes in role occupancy across four birth cohorts passing throughout mid-life over the period 1985-2000. Data from the General Household Survey is used to investigate the occupancy of four key roles: 'partner', 'parent', 'carer' and 'paid worker', analyzing separate and multiple role occupancies and level of commitment to a particular role. The implications of the findings for health and employment policies is also discussed.
