N-(5′-Phosphopyridoxyl)-4-aminobutyric acid: a stable bisubstrate adduct inhibitor of rat brain 4-aminobutyric acid aminotransferase

Summary N-(5-Phosphopyridoxyl)-4-aminobutyric acid, a stable adduct of pyridoxal phosphate and 4-aminobutyric acid, has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of rat brain 4-aminobutyric acid aminotransferase (GABA-T) with a K_i of 1.4 M.Acknowledgments. A cannabinoid with cardiovascular activity but no overt behavioral effects

Summary Abnormal-⁸-tetrahydrocannabidiol (ABN-⁸-THC) failed to elicit central nervous system and cardiovascular effects in laboratory animals. Abnormal-cannabidiol (ABN-CBD) was also devoid of overt behavioral effects but produced marked hypotension with only slight bradycardia in anesthesized dogs.Acknowledgment. Determinant selection is a macrophage dependent immune response gene function

Immune response (Ir) genes are linked to the species histocompatibility complex and define as yet uncharacterised phenotypic products which control the immune response to thymus dependent antigens. Antibody formation and antigen induced T lymphocyte proliferation are two examples of immune phenomena which, in vivo and in vitro, operate under Ir gene influence. To clarify their mechanism of action and cellular location, we have examined the contribution of antigen structure (amino acid sequence and conformation to Ir gene control of antigen recognition by T lymphocytes) as well as to the critical role played by the antigen presenting macrophage in expression of that control. We report that immune response gene control of antigen recognition operates at least in part at the level of the macrophage.     

Antioxidant effects on prostaglandin synthesis in rabbit kidney medulla slices

Summary Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol and N,N-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine inhibited the generation of medullary prostaglandin E, but 1,2-dimethoxyethane (OH scavenger) and 2,5-dimethylfuran (¹O₂ scavenger) stimulated basal prostaglandin E production 1.2–1.3-fold. These results suggest that the balance between formation and removal of cellular lipid peroxides sets a peroxide level that can regulate the rate of prostaglandin formation in cells.     

Effect of free fatty acids and cholesterol in vitro on liver plasma membrane-bound enzymes

Summary The effect of cholesterol and fatty acid treatment in vitro was tested on rat liver plasma membrane-bound enzymes and lipid fluidity. The observed alterations of membrane fluidity affect both (Na⁺–K⁺)-ATPase and Mg²⁺-ATPase activities but not 5-nucleotidase; basal adenylate cyclase as well as its hormonal sensitivity were differentially affected by changes of membrane microenvironment.This investigation was partially supported by the Italian National Research Council.     

Occurrence of Hyp3-bradykinin in methanol extracts of the skin of the South African leptodactylid frogHeleophryne purcelli

Summary Methanol extracts of the skin of the South African amphibians belonging to the genusHeleophryne (H. purcelli purcelli, H. purcelli depressa, H. purcelli orientalis, H. natalensis) contain large amounts (20–500 g/g fresh tissue) of Hyp³-bradykinin.Supported by grants from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy, and from the Ministry of Education, Japan.     

Genetic control by the HLA region of the immune response to factor VIII in hemophilic patients]

In 10 sibships of haemophilic A patients, every one including 1 haemophilic brother with an antibody to factor VIII and 1 haemophilic brother without antibody, pattern of HLA segregation was analysed. All sibships were HLA haploidentical or different and not HLA identical. This fact suggested a linkage between the major histocompatibility complex and an "Ir" gene to factor VIII.     

Leydig cell function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Streptozotocin diabetic rats were infertile as a result of decreased Leydig cell function of the testes. The major changes found were: decreased number of Leydig cells and their spontaneous secretion of testosterone. No change in the receptors to LH on the Leydig cells was observed. LH was found to be obligatory for the regulation of Leydig cell function and fertility.     

Alkaline phosphatase in human lymphocyte subpopulations.

The levels of membrane alkaline phosphatase have been measured on different lymphocyte fractions from human peripheral blood separated on bovine serum albumin discontinuous gradients. The peak in enzyme activity was observed in a non-T-, non-B-cell fraction, rich in "null" lymphocytes; the lowest values were found in the fraction with the highest proportion of T-cells.
