Comparison of the ototoxic effect of kanamycin on albino and pigmented rats, studied using an operant method.

A study was made of the effect of daily administration of kanamycin (400 mg kg-1) on the hearing of Wistar albino and Lister hooded (pigmented) rats, which had been conditioned to discriminate an acoustic signal. In all animals except one, the drug caused severe, permanent hearing impairment and there was no difference between albino and pigmented rats in onset or degree. Other work has suggested a mediatory role for melanin pigment in such drug ototoxicity but the significance of this must be questioned in view of the failure to find any differences in functional deficit.     

Distribution of the blood flow supplied by the vertebral artery in rats: anatomical, functional and pharmacological aspects.

In rats, the vertebral artery make only a minor contribution to the blood perfusion of the ponto-medullary area. This was measured with radioactive microspheres and was confirmed by methylmetacrylate casts and local injection of a centrally acting hypotensive drug.     

Raffinose as reserve sugar inDysdercus koenigii—a biosynthesis confirmation by14C glucose

Summary Dysdercus koenigii, studied for its sugar spectrum, showed consistent absence of trehalose in its blood and body muscles. Instead of this known reserve sugar, raffinose has been shown to fulfil this need. The biosynthesis confirmation has been made by¹⁴C glucose.     

Biotin as a regulator of some haematic parameters and of DNA-content of the liver of old rats

Summary Biotin administration to old rats (28 months) causes in the blood an increase of ATP, glucose, triglycerides, alkaline phosphatase and a decrease of cholesterol and acid phosphatase; in the liver DNA and electrostatic interactions between DNA and histones are increased. Such parameters come within the values shown by adult rats.     

Platelet aggregation following electrical stimulation

Summary It was demonstrated that the previous in vitro electrical stimulation of human and rat platelet-rich plasma does not modify the subsequent response of platelets to the aggregating activity of ADP, thrombin, thrombofax or adrenaline. This is interesting in view of the fact that the electrical stimulation can induce clot retraction.Acknowledgments. Influence of hydrocortisone on cytopathic effect of Newcastle disease virus and stability to freezing of vescicular stomatitis virus.

The presence of hydrocortisone in virus-infected cell cultures leads to enhancement of the syncytia forming ability of Newcastle disease virus and to production of vescicular stomatitis virus particles which loose their infectivity upon storage below 0 degrees C.     

Influence of pinealectomy on corticotropin (ACTH)

Summary Sensory deprivation produced by removing the eyes and olfactory bulbs in male rats allowed pinealectomy to markedly augment the post-adrenalectomy elevation of ACTH levels. Pineal removal or sensory deprivation separately did not have this effect. Thus, intact sensory input and an intact pineal gland are independently capable of restricting the post-adrenalectomy rise in ACTH levels.This work was supported in part by NIH Grant No. P30 HD 10202. Specificity in the hydrolysis of N-acyl-L-phenylalanine 4-nitroanilides by chymotrypsin

Summary The affinity of N-acyl-L-phenylalanine 4-nitroanilides for chymotrypsin is enhanced as the hydrophobicity of non-amino acid residues in the P₂-position of the substrates increases, whereas k_cat remains nearly constant. On the other hand, if alanine or leucine is in the P₂-position k_cat increases with decreasing K_M.
