Further studies on free amino-acids and peptides in eggs and embryos of different sea-urchin species and hybrids

Zusammenfassung Als Fortsetzung früherer Untersuchungen der freien Aminosäuren und Peptiden in Eiern und Embryonen verschiedener Seeigelarten, wurde das Muster der Ninhydrin-positiven Stoffe vonEchinocardium cordatum, Psammechinus microtuberculatus undGenocidaris maculata papierchromatographisch untersucht. DieEchinocardium-Eier zeichnen sich durch ihre hohe Konzentration an Valin (Fig. 1A, Fleck 16) und Leucin (Fleck 9) aus, welche bei allen übrigen von uns untersuchten Arten nur in sehr geringer Menge auftreten. Ferner sind sie durch das Vorkommen eines spezifischen Stoffes charakterisiert, der nur beiArbacia lixula nachgewiesen wurde (Fleck 17).Psammechinus microtuberculatus undGenocidaris maculata unterscheiden sich in den Peptiden. DiePsammechinus-Eier enthalten einen Stoff, der wahrscheinlich mit dem Tripeptid vonSphaerechinus granularis identisch ist (Fig. 1B, Fleck Nr. 23). InGenocidaris-Eiern wurde ein Peptid registriert, das auch beiParacentrotus lividus vorkommt (Fig. 1C, Fleck Nr. 21).Es wurden ferner Messungen von Eivolumen, Total-stickstoff und Totalmenge der freien Ninhydrin-positiven Substanzen des unbefruchteten Eies durchgeführt. Das Eivolumen und der Gesamtstickstoffgehalt sind beiEchinocardium cordatum am grössten, beiArbacia lixula am geringsten. DieEchinocardium-Eier sind durch ihren hohen Gehalt an freien Aminosäuren gekennzeichnet. Sie enthalten rund 7mal mehr solche Stoffe pro Ei als dieArbacia-Eier; zwischenParacentrotus lividus undSphaerechinus granularis zeigen die Messwerte keinen deutlichen Unterschied.

Zusammenfassung Der Einfluss von Serotonin, Adrenalin und Pitressin auf den Mechanismus der ACTH-Ausschüttung durch den Hypophysenvorderlappen wurde unter verschiedenen experimentellen Bedingungen untersucht.Bei normalen Ratten zeigten alle geprüften Pharmaka auf die Adenohypophyse eine stimulierende Wirkung, welche nach der Abnahme des suprarenalen Askorbinsäuregehaltes beurteilt wurde.     

Struktur und Wirkung des Muscarins,des Muscarons und ihrer Stereoisomeren

Summary All synthetic isomers of (+)-muscarine, the racemic forms of epi-muscarine, allo-muscarine, and epiallo-muscarine are at least 100 times less potent on blood pressure of cats and isolated frog hearts than the natural alkaloid. Only muscarones are more potent and exhibit strong nicotinic action on the frog rectus and in blocking ganglionic and neuro-muscular transmission in the cat. They closely resemble acetylcholine in their structure and action.The activity of the isomers depends on the position of the constituents on the tetrahydrofurane ring. Steric hindrance of the hydroxy or carbonylgroup and of etheroxygen plays an important part in the contact with the cholinergic receptor. As nor-muscarine without the quarternary nitrogen is inactive, at least 3 different points of contact have to be considered. This is stressed by the fact that muscarine is highly stereospecific in its action, whereas muscarone is not.     

Raffinose as reserve sugar inDysdercus koenigii—a biosynthesis confirmation by14C glucose

Summary Dysdercus koenigii, studied for its sugar spectrum, showed consistent absence of trehalose in its blood and body muscles. Instead of this known reserve sugar, raffinose has been shown to fulfil this need. The biosynthesis confirmation has been made by¹⁴C glucose.     

What distinguishes cosmopolitan and endemicDrosophila species?

Summary CosmopolitanDrosophila species can survive wide ecological tolerances measured by resistance to desiccation/temperature extremes compared with endemic rain forest species. This, rather than any genetic features, is important in helping to explain the widespread distributions of cosmopolitan species.We thank Dr Lee Ehrman for cultures ofD. paulistorum, and the Australian Research Grants Committee for financial support.     

Ultrastructural correlation of water reabsorption in isolated rat cauda epididymidis

Summary Electron microscopic study was made on the water reabsorption of the epithelial cells of the rat cauda epididymidis. It was shown that when the epididymal duct was reabsorbing water at a maximal rate, widely dilated intercellular spaces were seen. It is suggested that the standing gradient model of water reabsorption first proposed for the gall bladder may also operate in the cauda epididymidis.This work was supported in part by the World Health Organization and grant number 158/254 of Hong Kong University.     

Action ofβ-(4-chlorophenyl-GABA) on uptake and metabolism of GABA in different subcellular fractions of rat brain

Summary -(4-chlorophenyl)-GABA, a GABA mimetic compound, acts as an inhibitor of GABA metabolism in both synaptosomal and extrasynaptosomal compartments. It has no significant action on GABA or Glu uptake by synaptosomes.
