The focus of this review is the M-superfamily of Conus venom peptides. Disulfide rich peptides belonging to the M-superfamily have three loop regions and the cysteine arrangement:
CC–C–C–CC, where the dashes represent loops one, two, and three, respectively. Characterization of M-superfamily peptides
has demonstrated that diversity in cystine connectivity occurs between different branches of peptides even though the cysteine
pattern remains consistent. This superfamily is subdivided into five branches, M-1 through M-5, based on the number of residues
in the third loop region, between the fourth and fifth cysteine residues. M-superfamily peptides appear to be ubiquitous in
Conus venom. They are largely unexplained in indigenous biological function, and they represent an active area of research within

There is agreement neither concerning the point that is being made in Posterior analytics 96b15–25 nor the issue Aristotle intends to address. There are two major lines of interpretation of this passage. According to one, sketched by Themistius and developed by Philoponus and Eustratius, Aristotle is primarily concerned with determining the definitions of the infimae species that fall under a certain genus. They understand Aristotle as arguing that this requires collating definitional predictions, seeing which are common to which species. Pacius, on the other hand, takes Aristotle to be saying that a genus is studied scientifically through first determining the infimae species that fall under that genus. This interpretation attributes to Aristotle a distinction between primary and derivative subjects. I argue for Pacius’s interpretation, defending it against Barnes’s objections. 相似文献

As part of the 2001 Census, the One Number Census project estimated and adjusted the Census database for underenumeration. As a result of the highly innovative One Number Census and the Quality Assurance process it encompassed, it was also ensured that robust results could be obtained for each local authority area. This article examines some of the issues and analyses that were undertaken as part of that assessment of the 2001 Census population counts for England and Wales. The article firstly highlights the key issues surrounding the implementation of the 2001 Census fieldwork. The article then explores the 2001 Census results through a series of demographic analyses to illustrate the sorts of issues investigated during the One Number Census Quality Assurance process itself. These analyses look at the patterns contained within the results, and comparisons with key alternative sources of population counts. The parasite Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for hundreds of millions of cases of malaria, and kills more than one million African children annually. Here we report an analysis of the genome sequence of P. falciparum clone 3D7. The 23-megabase nuclear genome consists of 14 chromosomes, encodes about 5,300 genes, and is the most (A + T)-rich genome sequenced to date. Genes involved in antigenic variation are concentrated in the subtelomeric regions of the chromosomes. Compared to the genomes of free-living eukaryotic microbes, the genome of this intracellular parasite encodes fewer enzymes and transporters, but a large proportion of genes are devoted to immune evasion and host-parasite interactions. Many nuclear-encoded proteins are targeted to the apicoplast, an organelle involved in fatty-acid and isoprenoid metabolism. The genome sequence provides the foundation for future studies of this organism, and is being exploited in the search for new drugs and vaccines to fight malaria. 相似文献

The NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft was designed to provide a comprehensive characterization of the S-type asteroid 433 Eros (refs 1,2,3), an irregularly shaped body with approximate dimensions of 34 x 13 x 13 km. Following the completion of its year-long investigation, the mission was terminated with a controlled descent to its surface, in order to provide extremely high resolution images. Here we report the results of the descent on 12 February 2001, during which 70 images were obtained. The landing area is marked by a paucity of small craters and an abundance of 'ejecta blocks'. The properties and distribution of ejecta blocks are discussed in a companion paper. The last sequence of images reveals a transition from the blocky surface to a smooth area, which we interpret as a 'pond'. Properties of the 'ponds' are discussed in a second companion paper. The closest image, from an altitude of 129 m, shows the interior of a 100-m-diameter crater at 1-cm resolution. 相似文献

The T-cell receptor for antigen has been identified as a disulphide-linked heterodimeric glycoprotein of relative molecular mass (Mr) 90,000 comprising an alpha- and a beta-chain. The availability of complementary DNA clones encoding mouse and human beta-chains has allowed a detailed characterization of the genomic organization of the beta-chain gene family and has revealed that functional beta-chain genes in T cells are generated from recombination events involving variable (V), diversity (D), joining (J) and constant (C) gene segments. Recently, cDNA clones encoding mouse and human alpha-chains have been described; the sequences of these clones have indicated that functional alpha-chain genes are also generated from multiple gene segments. It is possible that chromosomal translocations involving T-cell receptor alpha- and beta-chain genes have a role in T-cell neoplasms in much the same way as translocations involving immunoglobulin genes are associated with oncogenic transformation in B cells. In the latter case, the chromosomal localization of the immunoglobulin genes provided one of the first indications of the involvement of such translocations in oncogenic transformation. The chromosomal assignment of the alpha- and beta-chain genes may, therefore, provide equally important clues for T-cell neoplastic transformation. The chromosomal location of the mouse and human beta-chain gene family has been determined: the murine gene lies on chromosome 6 (refs 12, 13) whereas the human gene is located on chromosome 7 (refs 13, 14).
