Enhancement of boll weevilAnthonomus grandis Boh. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) pheromone biosynthesis with JH III

Summary The juvenile hormone JH III, when incorporated at 1.0 ppm in the diet of adult male boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis Boh.), increased the biosynthesis of its 4 pheromone compounds by 3 times. The biosynthesis at lower and higher levels of JH III was less. JH I was not active at any of the concentrations tested.In cooperation with the Miss. Agr. and For. Exp. Sta., Miss. State, MS 39762. Development of photochemical activity during greening of heat-stressed etiolated seedlings of Zea mays

Summary When etiolated maize seedlings were subjected to a heat stress of 40 or 45°C for 16 h, and subsequently illuminated, photoreduction of ferricyanide and noncyclic photophosphorylation by chloroplasts isolated therefrom were retarded, and the lag in the appearance of these photochemical reactions was extended.

Summary The periferal distribution of the right aortic nerve has been studied in physiological experiments on the dog. It has been found that after section of both Hering's nerves and left vago-depressor trunk and after denervation of the baroceptor area ofMuratori-Nonidez lying at the root of the right subclavian artery, the electrical stimulation of one splancnic nerve or the intravenous injection of adrenaline still produces a reflex bradycardia; moreover the cooling of the vagus nerve still results in a rise of the blood pressure. It is inferred that a group of baroceptor fibres of the right aortic nerve originate from areas situated in the aortic region.
