Botany: floral fluorescence effect

The way flowers appear to insects is crucial for pollination. Here we describe an internal light-filtering effect in the flowers of Mirabilis jalapa, in which the visible fluorescence emitted by one pigment, a yellow betaxanthin, is absorbed by another, a violet betacyanin, to create a contrasting fluorescent pattern on the flower's petals. This finding opens up new possibilities for pollinator perception as fluorescence has not previously been considered as a potential signal in flowers.     

Genetic analysis of modifier variability inDrosophila subobscura

Summary The previously detected modifier variability acting on the expression of the Bare (Ba) locus inDrosophila subobscura is demonstrated to be due to polygenes situated along the chromosome O. From crosses between isogenic lines of high and low modifier effect we ascertained the presence of approximately 5 modifier loci.We are grateful to Dr M. Thyroid-catecholamines interrelationships in free fatty acids release from adipose tissue

Zusammenfassung Die Abgabe freier Fettsäuren aus dem mesenterialen Fettgewebe kann durch Phentolamin nicht nur bei hyperthyroeten, sondern auch bei euthyreoten Ratten blockiert werden. Die erhöhte Freisetzung bei Hyperthyreose lässt sich wahrscheinlich durch eine gesteigerte Katecholaminaktivität erklären.     

On the possibility of spontaneous tuberculous infection in the course of long-term trials in mice

Zusammenfassung Virulente Tuberkelbakterien wurden in Lunge und Milz von Mäusen entdeckt, die von intravenös infizierten Müttern geboren wurden und die mehr als 2 Monate in engem Kontakt mit den tuberkulösen Eltern lebten.

Riassunto L'ipertrofia compensatoria dei muscoli soleo e plantare di ratto in seguito a tenotomia del sinergista gastrocnemio non appare mediata dall'innervazione, ma è verosimilmente legata a un effetto diretto della accresciuta tensione meccanica sui muscoli interessati.     

Acid-base equilibrium in the heart-lung preparation

Résumé Etude de l'équilibre acide-basique de la préparation cur-poumon de l'étourneau, réalisée avec la technique habituelle et les moyens de corriger les altérations constatées. La recherche des causes de ces altérations a permis de conclure que l'alcalose respiratoire est due à la ventilation dont on se sert habituellement, tandis que l'acidose métabolique est due à une production de métabolites acides déclanchés surtout par la saignée des animaux donneurs et par la glucolyse qui se produit à partir de l'extraction du sang et jusqu'au moment de son emploi dans la préparation.

Influence of isoniazid and p-aminosalicyc acid on plasma 17-hydroxycorticosteroids in guinea pigs

Zusammenfassung Bei zehntägiger Verabreichung von 1 g PAS/kg oder 100 mg INH/kg peroral kommt es bei Meerschweinchen zu einer signifikanten Steigerung der 17-Hydroxy-corticosteroide. Eine ausgeprägte restimulierende Wirkung wurde im Fall von INH beobachtet. Der Unterschied fiel besonders am fünften Tag auf, wobei nach INH-Gabe die Steigerung zirkulierender Corticosteroide im Vergleich zur PAS verdoppelt war.
