Western juniper ( Juniperus occidentalis spp. occidentalis ) has rapidly expanded into shrub steppe communities in the intermountain Northwest during the past 120 yr. Cutting juniper is a management tool used to restore shrub steppe communities. Response of the understory after cutting is strongly influenced by plant species composition existing prior to treatment. This study assessed distribution patterns of understory plants over 2 growing seasons after tree cutting in a western juniper woodland. Cover, density, and diversity of understory species were compared among 3 locations: interspaces, duff zones (previously under tree canopies), and debris zones (beneath cut trees). Plant cover density increased in all zones following tree cutting. Understory vegetation in cut woodlands exhibited strong zonal distribution. Cover and density of Poa sandbergii and Sitanion hystrix and canopy cover of annual forbs were greatest in duff zones ( P P < 0.05). Debris zones tended to have the lowest overall understory cover and plant density values. Under juniper debris many species common to interspaces were reduced in density, although plants that survived or established beneath debris grew larger than their counterparts in interspaces. Species increased in density and cover under debris were plants characteristic of duff zones and whose seeds are typically wind dispersed.  相似文献

Although convincing evidence has been obtained for the imposition of self-tolerance by the intrathymic deletion of self-reactive T cells, the development of tolerance to antigens which are expressed only in the periphery is not so well understood. We have approached this question by creating transgenic mice which carry a class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene (H-2Kb) linked to the rat insulin promoter. Mice expressing the transgene develop diabetes, but do not appear to mount an immune response against the transgene-expressing pancreatic beta-cells, even when the transgene is allogeneic with respect to the endogenous host H-2 antigens. We have now explored the mechanism of this tolerance further. We find that spleen cells from pre-diabetic transgenic (RIP-Kb) mice do not kill targets bearing H-2Kb, whereas thymus cells from the same mice do. The unresponsiveness of these spleen cells can be reversed in vitro by providing recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2). In older, diabetic mice, responsiveness develops as the pancreatic beta-cells are lost. Our results point to an extrathymic mechanism of tolerance induction, dependent on the continuous presence of antigen and the lack of IL-2 in the local environment of potentially reactive T cells.  相似文献

Despite their ubiquitous presence in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the behavioral functions of peptide co-transmitters remain to be elucidated. The marine molluscAplysia, whose simple nervous system facilitates the study of the neural basis of behavior, was used to investigate the role of peptidergic co-transmission in feeding behavior. Several novel modulatory neuropeptides were purified, and localized to identified cholinergic motorneurons. Physiological and biochemical studies demonstrated that these peptides are released when the motorneourons fire at frequencies that occur during normal behavior, and that the peptides modify the relationship between muscle contraction amplitude and relaxation rate so as to maintain optimal motor output when the intensity and frequency of feeding behavior change.  相似文献
