The most intense colours displayed in nature result from either multilayer reflectors or linear diffraction gratings. Here we investigate the spectacular iridescence of a spine (notoseta) from the sea mouse Aphrodita sp. (Polychaeta: Aphroditidae). The spine normally appears to be deep red in colour, but when light is incident perpendicular to the axis of the spine, different colours are seen as stripes running parallel to the axis of the spine; over a range of smaller incident angles, the complete visible spectrum is reflected with a reflectivity of 100% to the human eye. The simple structure responsible for this effect is a remarkable example of photonic engineering by a living organism.  相似文献

Tumor immunotherapy is currently receiving close scrutiny. However, with the identification of tumor antigens and their production by recombinant means, the use of cytokines and knowledge of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II presentation has provided ample reagents for use and clear indications of how they should be used. At this time, much attention is focused on using peptides to be presented by MHC class I molecules to both induce and be targets for CD8+ cytolytic T cells. Many peptides generated endogenously or given exogenously can enter the class I pathway, but a number of other methods of entering this pathway are also known and are discussed in detail herein. While the review concentrates on inducing cytotoxic T cells (CTLs), it is becoming increasingly apparent that other modes of immunotherapy would be desirable, such as class II presentation to induce increased helper activity (for CTL), but also activating macrophages to be effective against tumor cells.  相似文献

Damage caused by introduced species results from the high population densities and large body sizes that they attain in their new location. Escape from the effects of natural enemies is a frequent explanation given for the success of introduced species. Because some parasites can reduce host density and decrease body size, an invader that leaves parasites behind and encounters few new parasites can experience a demographic release and become a pest. To test whether introduced species are less parasitized, we have compared the parasites of exotic species in their native and introduced ranges, using 26 host species of molluscs, crustaceans, fishes, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Here we report that the number of parasite species found in native populations is twice that found in exotic populations. In addition, introduced populations are less heavily parasitized (in terms of percentage infected) than are native populations. Reduced parasitization of introduced species has several causes, including reduced probability of the introduction of parasites with exotic species (or early extinction after host establishment), absence of other required hosts in the new location, and the host-specific limitations of native parasites adapting to new hosts.  相似文献

Sie werden an Beispielen der Harnstoffdenaturierung genetischer Varianten des Rinder--Lactoglobulins erläutert. The view that the fundamental kind properties are intrinsic properties enjoys reflexive endorsement by most metaphysicians of science. But ontic structural realists deny that there are any fundamental intrinsic properties at all. Given that structuralists distrust intuition as a guide to truth, and given that we currently lack a fundamental physical theory that we could consult instead to order settle the issue, it might seem as if there is simply nowhere for this debate to go at present. However, I will argue that there exists an as-yet untapped resource for arguing for ontic structuralism – namely, the way that fundamentality is conceptualized in our most fundamental physical frameworks. By arguing that physical objects must be subject to the ‘Goldilock's principle’ if they are to count as fundamental at all, I argue that we can no longer view the majority of properties defining them as intrinsic. As such, ontic structural realism can be regarded as the most promising metaphysics for fundamental physics, and that this is so even though we do not yet claim to know precisely what that fundamental physics is.  相似文献

Kashin-Beck disease(KBD)is a chronic and deformed endemic osteoarthritis,without fully known etiology.As compared to primary osteoarthritis(POA),its pathogenesis still exists controversial.We performed this study to discriminate the difference in genes expression involved in apoptosis from KBD cartilages and POA cartilages.Microarray analysis and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis(IPA)were used to identify the molecular mechanisms/canonical pathways implicated in KBD arthritis.Immunohistochemistry staining was carried out to detect tissue distribution of PDCD5 and EGR1 in the knee cartilages from KBD and POA.The 23 up-regulated apoptosis-related genes with[2-fold change were identified.‘‘Role of Macrophages,Fibroblasts,and Endothelial Cells in Rheumatoid Arthritis’’signaling was screened as the most relevant pathway through IPA.The 8 differentially regulated genes were verified by qRT-PCR analysis.Programmed cell death 5 in middle and deeper zones and early growth response 1 in superficial and middle zones showed protein overexpressed in KBD cartilage samples comparing to those in POA cartilage samples.Data indicates a higher expression level of apoptosis-related functional genes in KBD articular cartilage compared with POA articular cartilage.  相似文献

To identify and sort out subpopulations of cells from more complex and heterogeneous assemblies of cells is important for many biomedical applications, and the development of cost- and labour-efficient techniques to accomplish this is warranted. In this report, we have developed a novel array-based platform to discriminate cellular populations based on differences in cell surface antigen expressions. These cell capture microarrays were produced through covalent immobilisation of CD antibodies to plasma ion immersion implantation-treated polycarbonate (PIII-PC), which offers the advantage of a transparent matrix, allowing direct light microscopy visualisation of captured cells. The functionality of the PIII-PC array was validated using several cell types, resulting in unique surface antigen expression profiles. PIII-PC results were compatible with flow cytometry, nitrocellulose cell capture arrays and immunofluorescent staining, indicating that the technique is robust. We report on the use of this PIII-PC cluster of differentiation (CD) antibody array to gain new insights into neural differentiation of mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells and into the consequences of genetic targeting of the Notch signalling pathway, a key signalling mechanism for most cellular differentiation processes. Specifically, we identify CD98 as a novel marker for neural precursors and polarised expression of CD9 in the apical domain of ES cell-derived neural rosettes. We further identify expression of CD9 in hitherto uncharacterised non-neural cells and enrichment of CD49e- and CD117-positive cells in Notch signalling-deficient ES cell differentiations. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that covalent immobilisation of antibody arrays to the PIII-PC surface provides faithful cell surface antigen data in a cost- and labour-efficient manner. This may be used to facilitate high throughput identification and standardisation of more precise marker profiles during stem cell differentiation and in various genetic and disease contexts.  相似文献
