The halophilic properties of pyruvate kinase from Vibrio costicola, a moderate halophile.

Pyruvate kinase from Vibrio costicola, a moderate halophile, appears to be adapted to functioning in the presence of salt. Its stability depends on the ionic strength of the medium. The amino acid composition resembles that of other halophilic enzymes. It is proposed that the halophilic pyruvate kinase utilizes preferentially the Mn++ cofactor which forms more stable complexes in the presence of physiological concentrations of salt.     

The roots of reductionism: A counter-ontoepistemology for a systems approach

Both an ontoepistemology for reductionist modern science (counter-ontoepistemology) and an ontology for interpretive Systemology have been outlined in the two preceding papers in this special issue ofSystems Practice. In the present article, the notion of truth is interpreted in terms of both the ontoepistemology of reductionism and the ontology of interpretive systemology. Both interpretations are discussed. Such a discussion represents the objective of this paper, that is, to outline the epistemological face of the ontoepistemology of interpretive systemology. In order to design that epistemological face, the relation between ontology and epistemology must be clarified. Such a relation is seen from the standpoint already provided by the ontology. After the discussion on the notion of truth, the general shape of a systemic-interpretive inquiring process is outlined.     

Lack of effect of cortisone,thyroxine and insulin on the developmental pattern of mouse intestinal glucose-6-phosphatase activity

Summary Daily administration for 3 days of cortisone (25 g/g b.wt), thyroxine (1 g/g b.wt) or insulin (12.5 mU/g b.wt) to 8-day-old suckling mice does not induce a premature decrease of the phosphohydrolase activity of intestinal glucose-6-phosphatase.Supported by grant MA-5969 from the Medical Research Council of Canada (D.M.). Characterization of a thermosensitive protein from human milk whey

Summary A human milk whey protein, which aggregates at room temperature and resolubilizes when cooled, was purified by chromatography on hydroxyapatite. The present study demonstrated that the thermosensitive protein is a nonphosphorylated form of -casein.We thank Dr J.J. Pahud for preparation of anti Na-caseinate antiserum and Miss D. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) accelerates the maturation of fetal mouse intestinal mucosa in utero

Summary Pregnant Swiss ICR mice were injected i.p. with 0.5 g of epidermal growth factor (EGF) per g b. wt at 15, 16 and 17 days of gestation and fetuses were removed at 18 days of gestation. EGF treatment had no effect on the weight of the fetuses and on the length of the small intestine. No modification of the protein and DNA contents was noted. However brush border alkaline phosphatase and trehalase activities were significantly increased as well as endoplasmic reticulum membrane-bound glucose-6-phosphatase.Supported by grant MA-6069 from the Medical Research Council of Canada. Sintering study of Ti6Al4V powders with different particle sizes and their mechanical properties

Ti6Al4V powders with three different particle size distributions (0-20, 20-45, and 45-75 μm) were used to evaluate the effect of the particle size distribution on the solid-state sintering and their mechanical properties. The sintering kinetics was determined by dilatometry at temperatures from 900 to 1260℃. The mechanical properties of the sintered samples were evaluated by microhardness and compression tests. The sintering kinetics indicated that the predominant mechanism depends on the relative density irrespective of the particle size used. The mechanical properties of the sintered samples are adversely affected by increasing pore volume fraction. The elastic Young's modulus and yield stress follow a power law function of the relative density. The fracture behavior after compression is linked to the neck size developed during sintering, exhibiting two different mechanisms of failure:interparticle neck breaking and intergranular cracking in samples with relative densities below and above of 90%, respectively. The main conclusion is that relative density is responsible for the kinetics, mechanical properties, and failure behavior of Ti6Al4V powders.
