Giant collagen fibres in the gonopodium of the mosquitofishHeteradria formosa,Agassiz, 1853 (Pisces,Poeciliidae)

Summary The gonopodium of the mosquitofishHeteradria formosa was studied by transmission electron microscopy. In cross-section the gonopodium shows the following structure from the outside inwards: mutilayered epidermis, basal lamina and central supporting tissue, in which vessels and nerves are embedded. At the top of the gonopodium giant collagen fibres are found, which measure up to 150 m in length and 6 m in diameter. These fibres reinforce the gonopodium.This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Down's syndrome: changes in protein fractions of blood plasma

Summary A statistically significant decrease of prealbumin and statistically significant increases of alpha₂-macroglobulin and IgA were found in blood plasma of patients with Down's syndrome using quantitative crossed immunoelectrophoresis.We are indebted to Prof. T.C. Circadian rhythm ofβ-glucuronidase

Summary The circadian rhythm of rat liver-glucuronidase has been studied in animals kept under highly standardized laboratory condition. A clear 24 h rhythm has been observed for this enzyme with a peak activity at 01.00 h and a trough at 13.00 h.The work was carried out in Institut für Anatomie I, Medical School, Hannover (Federal Republic of Germany). A postsynaptic α, 2-receptor: The alpha-adrenergic receptor of hamster white fat cells

Summary The effects of selected -agonists and -antagonists on theophylline-induced lipolysis were investigate in isolated hamster white fat cells ₂-Agonists (tramazoline, clonidine) inhibited theophylline-induced lipolysis while an ₂-agonist (methoxamine) was without any effect. The inhibitory effect of ₂-agonists was suppressed by yohimbine (₂-antagonist), whereas ₂-antagonists were inefficient. This result implies that the -adrenergic receptor of hamster fat cells is of the ₂-type, although located postsynaptically.Acknowledgments. A selective concentration-dependent dysrhythmogenic and antidysrhythmic action of prostaglandins E2, F2α and I2 (prostacyclin) on isolated rat hearts

Summary Prostaglandins (PGs) E₂, F₂, and I₂ were examined for their effects on the electrical and mechanical activities of isolated rat, rabbit and guinea-pig hearts. All PGs produced dysrhythmias in rat hearts at low concentrations only, while higher concentrations were antiarrhythmic. Guinea-pig hearts were less responsive while rabbit hearts were completely resistant.We thank the Manitoba Heart Foundation for financial support and Dr J. Opposite effects ofβ-adrenoceptor stimulation and 8-bromo-cyclic AMP on potassium efflux in mammalian heart muscle

Summary -adrenoceptor stimulation by isoprenaline increases the potassium efflux in beating guinea-pig atria. This effect is not mimicked by 8-bromo-cyclic AMP, a cyclic AMP analogue which exerts a positive inotropic effect in this preparation.     

The effect ofβ-adrenergic stimulation and blockade on the efflux of PGE1-like material from the isolated perfused rabbit heart

Summary Prostaglandin (PG) release was measured from the isolated perfused rabbit heart. The effects of -adrenergic stimulation and blockade suggest that PG synthesis is regulated in part by adrenergic mechanisms.     

The effect of physostigmine on (Na++K+)-ATPase activity in different rat brain regions

Summary The activity of (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase and acetylcholine esterase were folloed in rat brain cerebral cortex, caudate, thalamus, hippocampus and medulla after i.v. administration of physostigmine. Both enzymes were found to be inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. The most pronounced inhibition of (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase was found in caudate. where the highest activity of acetylcholine esterase is found.These studies were supported by a grant from the Union of Science of Republic Serbia, No. 40404-14.     

Properties of the larval hemocytes ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Contrary to Srdi and Gloor's report, we find crystal cells (cc) in the lymph glands ofD. melanogaster larvae; the size and number of inclusions in the cc cannot be used to distinguish the 2 sibling species,D. melanogaster andD. simulans; cc in the hemocoel are not phagocytic cells; the surface properties of the lamellocytes are consistent with their derivation from plasmatocytes and not cc.Supported by grant No. CA16619 awarded by the National Cancer Institute, DHEW, USPHS.     

Effect of isoprenaline on dopamine receptors in the rabbit isolated renal artery

Summary The relaxant effects of isoprenaline on rabbit isolated renal artery and aorta were compared. The results suggest that although isoprenaline acts on -adrenoceptors in the aorta it stimulates dopamine receptors in the renal artery.
