Possible existence of a presynaptic positive feedback mechanism enhancing dopamine transmission in the anterior cingulate cortex of the rat

A series of microiontophoretic and VTA stimulation experiments, conducted in intact, GBR-12909-treated, alpha-methylparatyrosine-depleted or 6-hydroxydopamine-denervated rats, provide suggestive evidence for the existence of a presynaptic, positive feedback mechanism triggered by dopamine reuptake and favoring the release of this transmitter in the anterior cingulate cortex.     

Glycerol monoethers in the scent gland secretions of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox; Serpentes,Crotalinae)

Summary 1-O-Monoalkylglycerols with C₁₂ to C₂₀ chains were identified in the scent, gland secretions of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). This is the first documentation of these compounds in the skin secretions of a reptile.     

A glucagon-secretin-like peptide stimulates the intrinsic nervous plexus of guinea pig gallbladder

Summary The role of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), as a possible neurotransmitter of the intrinsic nerve plexus in the guinea pig gallbladder, was investigated by monitoring spontaneous contractile activity. VIP receptor antagonist (4 Cl-D-Phe⁶, Leu¹⁷)-VIP did not produce any effect on muscular tone and spontaneous activity, whereas (N-Ac-Tyr¹, D-Phe²)-GRF-(1-29)-NH₂, (14-GRF analog), which is known to stimulate digestive enzyme secretion by interacting with the VIP-preferring receptors, greatly increased the amplitude and frequency of waves as well as the muscular tone. Since VIP receptor antagonist acts selectively as a competitive antagonist for the action of VIP, we conclude that the gallbladder inhibitory intrinsic plexus neurotransmitter is not VIP, but a member of the glucagon-secretin family of peptides.     

GABA-A-mediated gastrin release induced by baclofen in the isolated vascularly perfused rat stomach

In order to investigate the role of peripheral GABA-B receptors, the effects of the putative GABA-B agonist baclofen on immunoreactive gastrin release from an isolated vascularly perfused rat stomach preparation were examined. The vascular infusion of baclofen at graded concentrations induced a dose-dependent increase in gastrin release; this was unaffected by the GABA-B antagonist delta-aminovaleric acid, but was fully prevented by the selective GABA-A antagonist bicuculline as well as by atropine or tetrodotoxin. These results suggest that the stimulant effects of baclofen are mediated by nervous cholinergic structures associated with GABA-A receptors, and indicate that this GABA-B agonist must be regarded as a partial agonist of peripheral GABA-A receptors.     

Thyroxine-induced redistribution of creatine kinase isoenzymes in rat cardiomyocyte cultures

Summary The present study demonstrates a change occurring in the creatine-kinase isoenzyme profile of cardiomyocyte cultures induced by a chronic administration of excessive amounts of thyroid hormones (TH). This change is manifested by an increased level of the CK-BB isoenzyme, generally at the expense of CK-MM isoenzyme. The elevation of CK-BB is probably a result of a specific effect of TH through activation of gene expression, rather than a contribution of an increased number of non-myocardial cells. The implications of these results in the diagnosis of heart failures are discussed.     

A hundred years of numbers. An historical introduction to measurement theory 1887–1990: Part I: The formation period. Two lines of research: Axiomatics and real morphisms, scales and invariance

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the historical evolution of the so-called Measurement Theory (MT). MT has two clearly different periods, the formation period and the mature theory, whose borderline coincides with the publication in 1951 of Suppes' foundational work, ‘A set of independent axioms for extensive quantities’. In this paper two previous research traditions on the foundations of measurement, developed during the formation period, come together in the appropriate way. These traditions correspond, on the one hand, to Helmholtz's, Campbell's and Hölder's studies on axiomatics and real morphisms and, on the other, to the work undertaken by Stevens and his school on scale types and transformations. These two lines of research are complementary in the sense that neither of them is enough taken alone, but together they contain all that is necessary to develop the theory, and it is in Suppes (1951) that these complementary approaches converge and all the elements of the theory are appropriately integrated for the first time. With Suppes' work, then, begins what may be called the ‘mature’ theory, which was to develop rapidly later on, especially during the 1960s. Our historical reconstruction is divided into two parts, each part devoted to one of the periods mentioned. Part I also contains a conceptual introduction which aims to establish the use of some notions, specifically those of measurement and metrization. Although the reconstruction is not exhaustive, it intends to be quite complete and up to date compared to what is available in measurement literature; in this sense the aim of this paper is mainly historical but, although secondarily, it also attempts to make some conceptual and metascientific clarifications on the subject of the theory.
