Distribution of the blood flow supplied by the vertebral artery in rats: anatomical, functional and pharmacological aspects.

In rats, the vertebral artery make only a minor contribution to the blood perfusion of the ponto-medullary area. This was measured with radioactive microspheres and was confirmed by methylmetacrylate casts and local injection of a centrally acting hypotensive drug.

Unidirectional rotary motion in a molecular system.

The conversion of energy into controlled motion plays an important role in both man-made devices and biological systems. The principles of operation of conventional motors are well established, but the molecular processes used by 'biological motors' such as muscle fibres, flagella and cilia to convert chemical energy into co-ordinated movement remain poorly understood. Although 'brownian ratchets' are known to permit thermally activated motion in one direction only, the concept of channelling random thermal energy into controlled motion has not yet been extended to the molecular level. Here we describe a molecule that uses chemical energy to activate and bias a thermally induced isomerization reaction, and thereby achieve unidirectional intramolecular rotary motion. The motion consists of a 120 degrees rotation around a single bond connecting a three-bladed subunit to the bulky remainder of the molecule, and unidirectional motion is achieved by reversibly introducing a tether between the two units to energetically favour one of the two possible rotation directions. Although our system does not achieve continuous and fast rotation, the design principles that we have used may prove relevant for a better understanding of biological and synthetic molecular motors producing unidirectional rotary motion.

用FI－HG－AAS系统对K2Cr2O7体系铅烷发生的碱性模式与酸性模式进行了对比研究，观察反应中反应物摩尔量与铅烷产率关系后发现酸性模式与碱性模式有相同的规律，采用高浓度K2Cr2O7氧化，其还原产物Cr(Ⅲ）会生成CrBn沉淀，严重吸附铅离子，导致铅信号下降。

Technology and the Myth of ‘Natural Man’

The main suggestions and objections raised by Don Ihde and Charles Lenay to my ‘Technology and the body: the (im)possibilities of re-embodiment’ are summarized and discussed. On the one hand, I agree that we should pay more attention to whole body experience and to further resisting Cartesian assumptions in the field of cognitive neuroscience and philosophy of cognition. On the other hand, I explain that my account in no way presupposes the myth of ‘natural man’ or of a natural, delineated body from before the fall into technology.

Demonstration of retinoic acid isomers in human urine under physiological conditions

Untransformed retinoic acid has never been demonstrated in human excreta under normal physiological conditions. We have developed a two-step liquid chromatographic system for the demonstration of subnanogram amounts of this compound in human urine without administration of any precursor.     

Observations on the toxicity and metabolic relationships of polygodial,the chemical defense of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata

Summary Polygodial (1), the defense metabolite stored in the skin of the nudibranchDendrodoris limbata, is toxic for the mollusc itself when injected into the hepatopancreas. Biosynthetic experiments using labeled mevalonic acid were devised to investigate a possible metabolic relationship between1 and the mixture of sesquiterpenoidic esters2, stored in the hepatopancreas.
