Enzymatic processing of pheromones and pheromone analogs

Summary Pheromone perception requires rapid enzymatic degradation of the active chemical signal in the sensory hairs. Three insects are used to illustrate chemical approaches to studying the degradation of pheromones by antennal enzymes. First, hydrolysis of acetate and haloacetate esters is examined in the diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella. Second, aldehyde oxidation and the selective inhibition of the oxidase and dehydrogenase activities are described for the tobacco budworm moth,Heliothis virescens. Finally, a stereochemical analysis of the epoxide-hydrase catalyzed addition of a water molecule to the oxirane ring of disparlure is described for the gypsy moth,Lymantria dispar.     

Hyperprolactinemia and estrogen-induced rhythms in LH and prolactin release in the ovariectomized rat

Short-term (9 days) hyperprolactinemia induced by pituitary grafts reduced basal plasma LH levels in ovariectomized rats whereas long-term (31 days) grafts increased basal LH levels. Although long-term grafts inhibited estradiol-induced prolactin surges, hyperprolactinemia had no effect on the LH surge. It is concluded that the estrogen-treated ovariectomized rat is not suitable for studying the effects of hyperprolactinemia on LH release.     

Increased formation of arginine deiminase by Clostridium perfringens FD-1 growing in the presence of caffeine

Caffeine slowed growth and markedly increased the formation of arginine deiminase in growing C. perfringens FD-1 when dextrin, but not maltose or maltotriose, served as the energy source. It is postulated that the ability of caffeine to induce arginine deiminase is related to an inhibition of polysaccharide utilization, resulting in a shift-down condition known to induce arginine deiminase and other enzymes in bacteria.     

Role of peripheral chemoreceptors in response to smoke-induced apnea vs tracheal occlusion

Summary Reflex autonomic changes which occur after cigarette smoke enters the upper airways are partially due to peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation. Chemoreceptor denervation attenuates but does not abolish smoke induced bradycardia. Denervation nearly abolishes bradycardia induced by tracheal occlusion. Hypertension accompanies smoke induced apnea but does not occur during tracheal occlusion.Acknowledgments. This study was supported by Oral Roberts University research funds.     

Local to unity,long‐horizon forecasting thresholds for model selection in the AR(1)

This article introduces a novel framework for analysing long‐horizon forecasting of the near non‐stationary AR(1) model. Using the local to unity specification of the autoregressive parameter, I derive the asymptotic distributions of long‐horizon forecast errors both for the unrestricted AR(1), estimated using an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, and for the random walk (RW). I then identify functions, relating local to unity ‘drift’ to forecast horizon, such that OLS and RW forecasts share the same expected square error. OLS forecasts are preferred on one side of these ‘forecasting thresholds’, while RW forecasts are preferred on the other. In addition to explaining the relative performance of forecasts from these two models, these thresholds prove useful in developing model selection criteria that help a forecaster reduce error. Effect of steviol and its structural analogues on glucose production and oxygen uptake in rat renal tubules

The effect of several natural products of Stevia rebaudiana on glucose production and oxygen uptake in rat renal cortical tubules was investigated. Steviol, isosteviol and glucosilsteviol decreased glucose production and inhibited oxygen uptake. The sweet principle stevioside, and steviolbioside, however, were without effect on gluconeogenesis and oxygen uptake.     

The largest known chromosome number for a mammal,in a South American desert rodent

Summary Tympanoctomys barrerae, a desert specialist member of the family Octodontidae, until now thought to be conservative, and ancestral to South American hystricognath rodents, presents the highest diploid chromosome number (2n=102) known in a mammal. Unexpectedly, its karyotype was found to be composed mainly of metacentric to sub-metacentric chromosomes. Mechanisms by which such a karyotype may have been derived are discussed.     

一种在不对称路由环境下的安全HIP中间系统

随着移动计算技术的高速发展,HIP因其在移动主机支持及安全等方面的优越特性而备受关注.可尽管HIP在保护通信两端方面具有卓越的安全特性,但作为HIP通信节点的中间系统(如NAT/FW系统)却不能得到有效保护,尤其是在不对称路由环境下的HIP中间系统,很容易遭受攻击.本文在分析HIP通信及其中间系统的基础上,结合HIP注册扩展协议,提出一种在不对称路由情况下的安全的基于HTN(HIP through NATs)的HIP中间系统模型.该系统不仅让HIP通信主机可以感知链路上的NAT等中间系统,HIP中间系统也可以通过注册协议,来学习连接状态信息,并验证通信发起主机是否真正感兴趣于成功建立HIP连接,并为后续更新报文的验证提供可信依据,从而有效避免遭受DoS及MitM攻击.
