The effect of acidic polysaccharides and prostaglandin-like substances isolated from Propionibacterium acnes on granulocyte chemotaxis.

Three acidic polysaccharide (AP) fractions and the prostaglandin-like substances (PLS) isolated from P. acnes were investigated regarding their chemotactic activities on polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Both AP's and PLS induced a significant chemotatic response, which suggests their involvement in inflammatory acne vulgaris.     

Inhibition of the NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase from Trypanosoma cruzi by silver nitrate.

The purified NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase from Trypanosoma cruzi was strongly inhibited by silver nitrate. The inhibition was reversed by reduced glutathione, and was modified by the presence of the substrates during preincubation of the enzyme with the inhibitor.     

Preparative separation of nucleated cells from human bone marrow.

A comparison has been made between the separation of nucleated cells from human bone marrow aspirates by high mol. wt polymers and the buffy coat techniques.     

The morphology of cytoplasts and karyoplasts produced by cytochalasin D.

The denucleation of L cells and human lymphocytes in suspension was carried out by incubation with cytochalasin D25 and 50 microgram/ml and with ultracentrifugation over a discontinuous Ficoll gradient. Ultrastructural examination of the separate layers confirmed the presence of the anucleate cytoplasm (cytoplasts) with intact membrane and the separated nuclei (karyoplasts).     

Serum prolactin levels and maintenance of progeny by prenatally-stressed female offspring.

Prenatal stress significantly reduced the number of progeny born to 47% of the female offspring and significantly increased the incidence of low birthweight young. None of these litters survived by the tenth postpartum day when serum prolactin levels were significantly reduced. Upon autopsy, these females had twice as many uterine implantation sites than the number of fetuses they bore, suggesting that a) the reduced postpartum serum prolactin most likely was the cause rather than the effect of the neonatal mortality and b) major hormonal deficiencies (possibly gonadotropic-related) were present even before giving birth.     

Development of oxidative metabolism in the non-innervated optic lobe of the chick.

Early removal of the optic cup of the chick embryo prevents innervation of the contralateral optic lobe. This reduces the rate of development od citrate synthetase. The posthatch increase of the level of this enzyme related to oxidative metabolism is not impaired by denervation of the chick optic lobe.     

Changes in the activities of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice due to ethanol, caffeine, or phenobarbital administration.

Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependent of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.     

The turnover of F-actin-bound ADP in vivo.

A procedure for estimating the rate of turnover of F-actin-bound ADP in vivo is described. A turnover rate of 0.88 h-1 was determined for mouse muscle F-actin. The validity of the method when used to estimate the turnover rate of F-actin per se is discussed in relation to the possible exchange of F-actin-bound ADP.
