HCO-3-ATPase activity distribution in rat liver cell fractions prepared by zonal centrifugation.

Plasma membrane sheets prepared by zonal centrifugation of a premicrosomal pellet obtained from a rat liver homogenate are devoid of HCO-3-ATPase activity. Since the microsomal fraction is also lacking in this ATPase activity, it can be concluded that the HCO-3-ATPase is not involved in the secretion of HCO-3 into bile.     

Increased susceptibility of Trypanosoma lewisi infected, or decomplemented rats to Salmonella typhimurium.

Rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi or decomplemented by injection of cobra venom factor or complement activating factor of trypanosomes were found to be more susceptible to infection with Salmonella typhimurium. Decomplemented rats subsequently infected with T. lewisi developed higher blood parasitemia than did normal T. lewisi infected rats.     

Toxicity of Phytophthora infestans and Alternaria solani to chick embryos

None of the extracts and culture filtrates from growth of 9 races of Phytophthora infestans on living potato tissue and potato dextrose broth are toxic to chick embryos. Chloroform extracts of 4 out of 10 isolates of Alternaria solani grown on potato dextrose broth showed some toxicity to chick embryos.     

The effect of glycine on serum luteinizing hormone in adult female rats

The response of serum luteinizing hormone to glycine has been studied during the estrous cycle in adult female rats. I.p. administration of 200 mg of glycine significantly elevated serum luteinizing hormone levels at all stages of the estrous cycle.     

Distribution of calcitonin cells in the thyroid glands of normal adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta.

The calcitonin cells of adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta are located in the central region of thyroid along the median axis. The anterior and posterior poles, the isthmus and peripheral regions of thyroid are completely devoid of C cells. The parathyroid also lacks C cells.     

Effect of Tween 80 on lipids of Mycobacterium phlei ATCC 354

Addition of Tween 80 to the growth medium brings about qualitative and quantitative changes in the lipids of Mycobacterium phlei ATCC 354. The results suggest that Tween 80 itself may be a variant in the system.     

Decreased serum responsiveness by primary monolayer cultures of preneoplastic and neoplastic mammary epithelial cells

Monolayer cultures of normal, preneoplastic and neoplastic murine mammary epithelial cells were exposed to various types of mammalian serum. A progressive decline in levels of thymidine incorporation together with a change in the ordering of sera which stimulates optimal incorporation was observed in the transformed cells.     

Change in taste preference related to aging of taste cells in rat

Following the suppression of renewal of rat taste cells by vinblastine sulphate, the preference for sucrose decreased markedly while the aversion to quinine did not change. The results suggest that the sensitivity of taste cells to sucrose decreases with their aging, but the sensitivity to quinine increases.     

The effect of methallibure (I.C.I. 33,828) on the steriodogenesis in the ovary and testis of a fresh water teleost, Cyprinus carpio

Methallibure treatment of mature Cyprinus carpio causes a marked reduction in the steroidogenesis, as indicated by the fall in 3beta-HSD activity in the gonads. Significance of these results is discussed.
