Sylvaticin: a new cytotoxic and insecticidal acetogenin from Rollinia sylvatica (Annonaceae)

Sylvaticin (I), a new tetrahydroxy annonaceous acetogenin with nonadjacent tetrahydrofuran rings, has been isolated from the dried fruits of Rollinia sylvatica St. Hil. (Annonaceae). This compound is extremely cytotoxic to human tumor cells and shows promising insect control properties.     

Annexins: what are they good for?

Annexins comprise a unique family of calcium- and phospholipid-binding proteins. At least one of the twenty members thus far described from this family can be found expressed in nearly every eukaryotic cell type. As common as these proteins may be, no one clear function for all has been established. Historically, individual members of this family have been given various names describing their ability to associate with a host of intra- and extracellular proteins and with cellular lipid membranes. The collection of reviews in this issue of CMLS represents an effort to offer a coordinated view of the research activities in the field and to extract structural and functional commonalities.     

Allocating the weights in the linear opinion pool

A standard approach to the combination of probabilistic opinions involves taking a weighted linear average of the individuals distributions. This paper reviews some of the possible interpretations that have been proposed for these weights in the literature on expert use. Several paradigms for selecting weights are also considered. Special attention is devoted to the Bayesian mechanism used for updating expert weights in the face of new information. An asymptotic result is proved which highlights the importance of choosing the initial weights carefully.     

Forecasting time series with increasing seasonal variation

Four options for modeling and forecasting time series data containing increasing seasonal variation are discussed, including data transformations, double seasonal difference models and two kinds of transfer function-type ARIMA models employing seasonal dummy variables. An explanation is given for the typical ARIMA model identification analysis failing to identify double seasonal difference models for this kind of data. A logical process of selecting one option for a particular case is outlined, focusing on issues of linear versus non-linear increasing seasonal variation, and the level of stochastic versus deterministic behavior in a time series. Example models for the various options are presented for six time series, with point forecast and interval forecast comparisons. Interval forecasts from data-transformation models are found to generally be too wide and sometimes illogical in the dependence of their width on the point forecast level. Suspicion that maximum likelihood estimation of ARIMA models leads to excessive indications of unit roots in seasonal moving-average operators is reported.     

Changes of the level of proteinase inhibitors in rat plasma during turpentine-induced inflammation

The levels of rat plasma alpha-macroglobulins, alpha-cysteine proteinase inhibitor, haptoglobin and antipapain activity were studied during the acute-phase reaction after an injection of alpha-pinen. An increase in concentration of all the compounds examined was observed.     

Calcium transport by red blood cell membranes from young and adult cattle

It is shown using inside-out membrane vesicles that cattle red cells extrude calcium by means of a calmodulin sensitive Ca-pump whose activity is high in calves and extremely low in adult cows. The decline is not due to loss of calmodulin susceptibility nor to a drop in Ca-affinity.     

The conduction velocity, number, and diameter of unmyelinated fibers in Remak's nerve

Remak's nerve in the chicken was examined ultrastructurally and electrophysiologically to determine the characteristics of fibers in the nerve trunk. The ration of unmyelinated fibers to myelinated ones was 111:1. The mean number of unmyelinated fibers was 3555 plus/minus 232 (SEM, n=5) and they had a mean diameter of 0.502 plus/minus 0.034 (SEM) micron. The compound action potential consisted almost entirely of a large diphasic waveform which had a mean peak conduction velocity of 0.62 plus/minus 0.031 (SEM, n=5) m.s-1 at 37 degrees C.
