Insulin stimulation of glucose and amino acid transport in mouse fibroblasts with elevated membrane microviscosity

Summary Basal and insulin-stimulated transport of 2-deoxy glucose and of -aminoisobutyric acid in mouse 3T3 fibroblasts were modulated by increasing the lipid microviscosity of the cell plasma membrane. The kinetics indicate that the insulin effect is induced either by recruitment of new transport carriers or by reduction of the translocation activation energy.This investigation was supported by grant No.5-R01-CA-27471-02, awarded by the National Cancer Institute, Department of Health, Education and Welfare.     

Studies on proteolytic digestion of myosin from red and white skeletal muscles of the rabbit

Zusammenfassung Der Vergleich der tryptischen und chymotryptischen Myosinspaltungen aus weissem und rotem Kaninchenmuskel ergibt: Nichteiweißstickstoffbildung zeigt durch Trypsin eine schnellere Myosinspaltung im weissen Muskel; Chymotrypsin spaltet beide Myosine mit gleicher Geschwindigkeit.     

Number of glucocorticoid receptors in lymphocytes and their sensitivity to hormone action

The study demonstrated a decreased level of glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in peripheral blood lymphocytes from hypercholesterolemic subjects, and an elevated level in patients with acute myocardial infarction. In the lymphocytes with a high GR number, dexamethasone inhibited [3H]-thymidine and [3H]-acetate incorporation into DNA and cholesterol, respectively, in the same manner as in the control cells. On the other hand, a decreased GR number resulted in a less efficient dexamethasone inhibition of the incorporation of labeled compounds. These data showed that the sensitivity of lymphocytes to glucocorticoids changed only with a decrease of GR level.     

Immunohistochemical demonstration of corticotrophic cells concentrated in the rostral zone of the pars intermedia of the mouse hypophysis

Résumé La nature corticotrope des cellules constituant la partie rostrale de la pars intermedia de l'hypophyse de souris est établie par la microscopie électronique et la cytoimmunofluorescence. Cette zone réagit positivement avec les anticorps anti-ACTH et négativement avec les anticorps anti-MSH.     

Effects of physalaemin, a vaso-active peptide from amphibian skin, on the excitability of an identifiable molluscan giant neurone of Achatina fulica Férussac.

We examined effects of several vasoactive peptides (substance P, physalaemin, neurotensin, bradykinin, angiotensin etc.) on the excitability of molluscan giant neurones identified in the subesophageal ganglia of Achatina fulica Férussac. Of these peptides, only physalaemin showed a remarkable excitatory effect on a giant tonically autoactive neurone.     

Distribution of14C after topical application of14C-labeled 1,3-bis-(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) in mice

Summary Following topical application of¹⁴C-labeled 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU, carmustine) to the skin of mice radioactivity was found in all viscera and tissues examined.
