Altered adrenergic responses of the coronary arterial bed in alloxan-diabetic dogs

Summary The conductivity of the coronary arterial bed increased in healthy and decreased in alloxan-diabetic dogs in response to intracoronary administration of norepinephrine or sympathetic stimulation. This suggests a modification of adrenergic receptors sensitivity in diabetes.     

A rapid method of following the spontaneous regression of experimental leukemias

Summary Transplantation of virus and chemically induced leukemias from C3H/He-mgxAKR/F₁ hybrid mice into C3H/He-mg males induced leukemias in the latter, which was followed by a spontaneous regression of the disease within a few days. The regression of leukemia could easily be followed by measuring the changes in the pyruvate kinase activity of para-aortic lymph node cells.     

Distribution of14C after topical application of14C-labeled 1,3-bis-(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) in mice

Summary Following topical application of¹⁴C-labeled 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU, carmustine) to the skin of mice radioactivity was found in all viscera and tissues examined. Zusammenfassung In der Harnblase von Ratten wurde der Druck während einseitiger und zweisceitiger Pelvicuserizung gemessen. Nach Injektion von Eserin wurde bereits bei einseitiger Reizung eine maximale Blasenkontraktion erhalten. Zusätzlike Reizung der Nn. hypogastrici führt-ohne funktonelle Überlappungzu weiterer Kontraktionssteigerung.

Systemic oxygen transport and erythropoiesis in the mouse

Summary Removal of 15% of blood volume in the mouse increases erythropoiesis by a factor of 2.2 when measured 12 h after bleeding. Exposure of normal mice to 40% reduced barometric pressure for the same period of time increases erythropoiesis only by a factor of 1.6. The response to hypoxia takes place in the presence of a 40% reduction of oxygen consumption and tissue-venous P_{o 2}, changes which are concomitant with a 5-fold increase in plasma erythropoietin activity. The larger response in anemic animals on the other hand occurs without any detectable change in these parameters. These results cast serious doubts about the interpretation of the quantitative homeostatic control of erythropoiesis based solely on the action of erythropoietin.Acknowledgments. Physiological state of submitochondrial particles and their susceptibility to Triton X-100

The solubilizing effect of Triton X-100 on beef heart submitochondrial particles (ETPH) has been studied under various physiological conditions. Coupled, uncoupled and azide-inhibited ETPH particles have been studied. Quantitative and qualitative differences are found in the proteins solubilized by the detergent from ETPH particles under the various conditions tested.     

Aspects of interastrocytic gap junctions in blood-brain barrier in the experimental penumbra area, revealed by transmission electron microscopy and freeze-fracture

Interastrocytic gap junctions in the blood-brain barrier of the experimental penumbra area were studied in the cat caudate nucleus 1 h after ischemia. Transmission electron microscopy and freeze-fracture studies revealed only slight changes in gap junctions between astrocytes, indicating that these junctions are very resistant to hypoxia.
