2/8 translocation in a Japanese Burkitt's lymphoma

Summary A new translocation between chromsomes 2 and 8 t(2p^–; 8q⁺), was found in fresh lymphoma cells from a Japanese patient with Epstein-Barr virus-carrying Burkitt's lymphoma, and in a lymphoma cell line derived from this patient. There was no 14q⁺ translocation, as has been previously described in African and North American Burkitt's lymphomas.Supported by a grant-in-aid for Cancer Research (52-11) from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan.     

Electrochemical, photoelectrochemical, electrocatalytic and catalytic reduction of redox proteins

Redox proteins catalyse the reactions of a wide variety of otherwise intractable substrates, such as dinitrogen, alkanes, arenes, terpenes and steroids. Two major factors impede the utilization of these enzymes--the inefficient electron transfer between the enzyme and electrode, and the properties often, but not inevitably, associated with enzymes, such as instability, complexity, and expense. We have now shown that the former can be overcome and that proteins can be coupled, via electrodes, to a number of energy sources; the latter is the subject of much effort elsewhere. We demonstrated previously that certain redox proteins can be reduced very efficiently electrochemically (Fig. 1a). Light and hydrogen are the two other convenient energy sources that could be used for such reductions, and we now report the reduction of cytochrome c by these means.     

Murine type C endogenous virus expression in murine 129 teratocarcinoma cell line]

Murine type C viral information is detectable in the cellular genome of both differentiated and undifferentiated cell lines derived from 129 Mouse teratocarcinoma. Cytoplasmic RNA expression which is negligible in differentiated cells, is significantly higher in multipotential undifferentiated cells. Furthermore it was observed that in vitro differentiation of multipotent cells leads to a decrease of this expression.     

Radio-immunologic determination of hypophyseal vasotocin by Phoxinus laevis during experimental modification of osmotic equilibrium]

Hypophysial vasotocin of Phoxinus laevis is determined by radio-immunoassay. With different sea water dilutions it is shown that hypophysial vasotocin concentration varies with ambient salinity. This fact agrees with histological pictures. Moreover, in comparison with the results of other authors, it is established that the hypophysial morphological modifications appeared only after the hormonal changes.     

Mycobacterial adjuvant and its carrier

Résumé Une fraction peptidoglycolipidique peut être extraite à partir du BCG par décapage acide dans un mélange de solvants fortement lipophiles. Cette fraction appelée ?LF? peut reproduire l'activité adjuvante du BCG entier dans les réactions immunitaires à médiation cellulaire et humorale. L'activité adjuvante du BCG appara?t comme liée à ce composant actif, LF, car après son extraction, le résidu bacillaire (BB) est dépourvu d'activité adjuvante. Néanmoins lorsque BB est utilisé pour adsorber (?véhiculer?) LF, le complexe BB-LF s'est révélé le meilleur adjuvant.

The effects of acetylation on the binding region of cartilage proteoglycans to hyaluronic acid

Summary Proteoglycans in cartilage are found as aggregates and as monomers. Evidence has been obtained indicating that hyaluronic acid, normally present in this tissue, binds together monomers into large molecular weight aggregates. In this investigation, the interacting region of the protein backbone has been studied. The results unequivocally demonstrated that the epsilon amino groups of lysine are involved in hyaluronic acid binding to proteoglycans and that their blocking by acetylation either prevents reaggregation or disaggregates the high mol. w aggregates.Supported by a grant from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome, Italy, and U. Role of a free-living amoeba from water, Acanthamoaba castellani, in the transport of naked or enveloped animal viruses

The trophozo?ts of Acanthamoeba castellanii are unable to adsorb poliovirus or vesicular stomatitis Virus. After encystment in medium containing respectively 5.4 x 10(8) and 3 x 10(9) P.F.U./ml cysts did not contain Viruses. These data do not agree with a current hypothesis by which water's free Amoeba could carry animal Viruses.
