Ca2+-dependence and metabolic status of an obligate thermophile,Thermoactinomyces vulgaris,under shake culture conditions

Summary Ca²⁺ stimulates germination ofT. vulgaris spores. There is a higher mycelial yield as well as higher protein, DNA, RNA and free Pi content in cultures grown in the presence of Ca²⁺ as compared to those grown in the absence of this divalent cation.Grateful thanks are due to Professor R. Amino acid requirements of the bugDysdercus similis freeman (hemiptera: Heteroptera)

Summary The amino acid requirements for moulting, growth and development ofDysdercus similis have been investigated. The insects could not moult and reach maturity when given 10 essential amino acids only. However, if these were supplemented either with glutamic acid, glycine or aspartic acid growth and moulting was found to be normal.Dysdercus has an unusual synthetic mechanism for converting tyrosine into phenylalanine.The author is grateful to Prof.R. Radioimmunoassay of some hormones simultaneously measured in serum and breast cyst fluid

Blood and breast cyst fluid were drawn simultaneously for hormonal determination. There was no difference between serum and cyst fluid values of PRL and TSH. A significant difference was noted for LH (p less than 0.01) and FSH (p less than 0.05), serum concentrations being higher than cyst fluid concentrations.     

A synthesis of anhydrobrazilic acid

Zusammenfassung Eine neue Synthese von Anhydrobrazilinsäure wird beschrieben. Es wird gezeigt, dass Arylidenchroman-on-4 zu Homoisoflavon isomerisiert werden kann.     

Tobacco mosaic virus inhibition by bark extracts

Zusammenfassung Die bekannte Hemmwirkung von Gewebeextrakten ans Pflanzenteilen auf die Virusentwicklung (Infektiosität ?) wird ergänzt durch Untersuchungen über hemmende Wirkungen von Borkenextrakten. Es wurden Pflanzen mit und solche ohne hemmende Wirkung ihrer Borkenextrakte gefunden.     

The effects of MNG and NMU on mitotic activities and DNA synthesis

Zusammenfassung Mit Nitrosemethylurethan und Nitroseguanidin behandelte keimende Gerstensamen zeigten eine auffallend geringere Mitoseaktivität, chromosomale Abweichungen, nichtverzögerte Effekte und Abnahme der DNA-Synthese. Die chromosomale Schädigung scheint von der DNS-Synthese unabhängig zu sein.     

Comparison of the production rates of bacteria in the rumen estimated by using labelled live and formaldehyde treated mixed bacterial cells

Summary The bacteria production rates in the rumen have been estimated by injecting¹⁴C- and³⁵S-labelled mixed rumen bacteria, either live or killed by treatment with formaldehyde, into the rumen and applying isotope dilution technique. The rate of bacteria production when estimated by using either live- or dead-(protected-)labelled bacterial cells were comparable.

White leaf disease ofCynodon dactylon Pers., a mycoplasmal disease in India

Summary White leaf disease of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon Pers.) has been reported from a few countries to be caused by a mycoplasma-like organism. We have tried to observe the causal agent in white leaf diseased plants ofC. dactylon collected near Varanasi. Both tetracycline treatment and electron microscopy have revealed the presence of mycoplasma-like bodies in phloem cells of the diseased plants.
