Darier’s disease: a calcium-signaling perspective

Ca²⁺ influx evoked across the plasma membrane upon internal store depletion is essential for a myriad of cellular functions including gene expression, cell proliferation, differentiation and even apoptosis. Darier’s disease (DD), an autosomal dominant inherited disorder of the skin, arising due to mutations in the isoform 2 of the sarco (endo) plasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ ATPase (SERCA2), exemplifies an anomaly of Ca²⁺ signaling disturbances. Owing to loss of function mutations in SERCA2, keratinocytes in DD patients have a reduced pool of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca²⁺. Importantly, the status of ER Ca²⁺ is critical for the activation of a class of plasma membrane Ca²⁺ channels referred to as store operated Ca²⁺ channels (SOCs). The widely expressed transient receptor potential (TRP) family of channels is proposed to be SOCs. In this review we discuss DD from the viewpoint of Ca²⁺ signaling and present a potential role for TRPC1 in the disease pathogenesis. Eco-physiological studies onZornia diphylla pers. with reference to adaptive seed dormancy

Summary Seeds ofZornia diphylla possess a complex type of dormancy which is of great survival value for the species. Seeds show polymorphism. The optimum temperature for germination explains the cause of its distribution in the tropics. The grazing and scraping promotes the vegetative growth.The author is grateful to Dr.R. Sahai and Dr.R. Summary Coccuvine C₁₇H₁₉NO₂, m.p. 137–38°, a new alkaloid fromCocculus laurifolius DC has been assigned the structure and stereochemistry as (I) on the basis of spectroscopic studies and chemical correlation.     

LSD induced chlorophyll mutations in barley

Summary In earlier reports, LSD was found to induce extensive chromosomal aberrations in barley. With the same dose it is now observed that LSD is potent in the induction of chlorophyll mutations. This may be the first evidence that the drug induces gene mutations in plants.Acknowledgent. We are grateful to Dr H.K. LSD: The distribution of [3H]LSD in the reproductive system of the male rat and placental transfer in the female rat

Summary After administration of [³H]LSD to male rats, radioactivity was present in all tissues of the reproductive system, notably associated with spermatozoa in the epididymis. In addition, in pregnant rats LSD and/or metabolites readily crossed the placental barrier.     

Possibility of using131I-albumin as a marker for the estimations of microbial protein synthesis rates in the rumen

Summary Total microbial protein synthesis rates in the rumen of buffaloes were estimated by isotope dilution technique, using¹³¹I-albumin treated with tannic acid as a marker. The animals were fed groundnut cake treated with formaldehyde to meet 50% of their digestible crude protein (DCP) requirement and 2.5% urea molasses mixture was given to meet the remaining requirement of DCP. Wheat straw was fed as the basal roughage. The total average microbial protein synthesis was 58.14 g/day.
