Somatostatin inhibits the mitogenic effect of thyroliberin

Summary The effect of somatostatin and of thyroliberin on the mitotic incidence in the organ-cultured anterior pituitary lobe of the rat was investigated, using the colchicine metaphase-arrest technique. It was found that somatostatin added to the culture medium, together with thyroliberin, blocked the mitogenic effect of the latter.This work was supported by Polish Academy of Sciences, program No 10. 4.     

Aging of the erythrocyte. III. Cation content

Summary Studies on the main cation content of density-separated bovine erythrocytes showed a progressive decrease in the levels of K⁺ and Mg²⁺ with increasing cell density (and age) accompanied by an increase in the level of Na⁺. The magnitude of net cation loss corresponded to that of red cell volume decrease, but could not account for the total increase in the microviscosity of the erythrocyte interior.     

Some properties of external NADH oxidation by human placental mitochondria.

Isolated human term placenta mitochondria catalyse oxidation of external NADH in the presence of cytochrome c. This reaction is insensitive to the respiratory chain inhibitors such as rotenone and antimycin A, and is not coupled to phosphorylation. Comparison of the effect of Mg++ ion on NADH plus cytochrome c oxidation by human term placental, human skeletal muscle and rat skeletal mitochondria showed that Mg++ ion exerts an inhibitory effect in the case of human mitochondria and a stimulatory effect in the case of rat skeletal muscle mitochondria.     

The effect of inhalatory adaptation to histamine on histamine shock and the anaphylactic shock

Résumé Les animaux adaptés à l'histamine sont moins sensible à l'histamine et aux produits d'une réaction antigène-anticorps. La tolérance des cobayes adaptés est augmentée particulièrement après une exposition supplémentaire dans l'aérosol histaminique.     

Adsorption of hageman factor (factor XII) on collagen

Résumé Nous avons trouvé que le facteur Hageman (factor XII), contenu dans le plasma humain citraté, pauvre en plaquettes, est adsorbé presque sélectivement par le collagène. Il est également possible d'éluer ce facteur au pH alcalin.

Summary The utilization of sulphate labelled with S³⁵ to the synthesis of chondroitin sulphate of the cartilage of normal and scorbutic guinea pigs has been examined. The average incorporation of S³⁵ in the costal cartilage in the deficient animal was about one half that of the normal.     

Basal forebrain heating and osmotic reactivity of the thirst mechanism in dogs

Résumé Les expériences ont été conduites sur des chiens auxquels on a chroniquement implanté des thermodes dans la région du prosencéphale basal. On a constaté quel'échauffement de la région située en avant de la comissure antérieure a abaissé la réactivité osmotique du mécanisme de la soif. L'augmentation de la température de la même région a produit aussi une accélération de la polypnée. II faudrait alors admettre que chez le chien l'échauffement de la région thermosensitive supprime la sensibilité du mécanisme de la soif aux stimulus osmotiques.

Allatotropic activity of the median neurosecretory cells ofGalleria mellonella (lepidoptera) larval brain

Summary The brain allatotropic hormone (ATTH) is released inGalleria mellonella from the Median neurosecretory cells located in the pars intercerebralis. These cells show the ability to elicit supernumerary larval molts upon implantation into sensitive host larvae, and the ability to in vitro stimulate the juvenile hormone synthesis in corpora cardiaca-corpora allata glands ofG. mellonella.11 November 1986Acknowledgments.
