Membrane potentials of the squid giant axon recorded with an inserted antimony microelectrode

Résumé Les enregistrements pris simultanément des axones géants deLoligo au moyen de microélectrodes de KCl et de l'antimoine donnent à peu près les mêmes valeurs pour le potentiel de repos et pour la pointe. Les deux microélectrodes enregistrent d'une façon identique les changements de potentiel de la membrane pendant la dépolarisation avec KCl et pendant la restitution. Bien que les microélectrodes de Sb restent toujours réversibles à H⁺, les potentiels enregistrés ne correspondent pas à la distribution de H⁺. Ces données, comme d'autres, indiquent que le potentiel de repos n'est pas une conséquence des distributions deDonnan, mais plutôt, selon toute probabilité, un effet des propriétés de la membrane électrogène.

The effects of sodium and amiloride on the motility of the caudal epididymal spermatozoa of the rat

Summary The forward motility of the rat caudal epididymal spermatozoa has been studied in different Na⁺ concentrations. When spermatozoa were suspended in a completely Na⁺-free solution, the forward motility suffered a progressive fall and after 3 h was completely suppressed. This effect was fully reversible on resuspending the spermatozoa in a solution containing Na⁺. Amiloride caused a fall in motility and the effect was similar to that of Na⁺ removal. The inhibition by amiloride of the motility was concentration dependent and the dose response curve showed an IC₅₀-value of about 5×10^–5 M. The role of Na⁺ influx in the maintenance of sperm motility was discussed.This work was supported by the World Health Organization.The technical assistance of Mr C.M. Stimulation of human chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone secretion by tumor promoters,phorbol ester and teleocidin B,in cultured choriocarcinoma cells

Summary Both 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-1-acetate and teleocidin B stimulated the secretion of human chorionic gonadotropin by cultured choriocarcinoma cells. These tumor promoters also stimulated production of progesterone in the cells. However, the 2 tumor promoters did not exert a marked effect on the cellular binding of epidermal growth factor that also had a stimulatory effect on production of these hormones.     

Alteration in the secretion of anterior pituitary hormones during dimethylbenzathracene induction of mammary tumors in rats]

In a sensitive strain of Rat (Sprague-Dawley) a deregulation of the secretion of some pituitary hormones was noted in the female during induction of mammary tumors by dimethylbenzanthracene administration. The deregulation occurred quickly and depended on the stage of the estrous cycle. It mainly consists of hyposecretion of gonadotropins. TSH and GH and of hypersecretion of prolactin.     

A chromosome study of the parthenogenetic rice water weevil,Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Japan

Summary The chromosomes of the so-called rice water weevil,Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus, Kuschel obtained from Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, were studied in both oogonial and oocyte-maturation divisions in squash and sectioned slides, respectively. The chromosome number was confirmed as exactly 33 in both divisions. No reduction division takes place. It is therefore concluded thatLissorhoptrus oryzophilus is a parthenogenetic triploid in Tokoname City.     

Pigment granules in choroidal melanophores of the albino goldfish

Summary Pigment granules in choroidal melanophores of the albino goldfish contained fine particulate materials which were in various degrees aggregated in clumps. Tyrosinase was considered to be present in an inhibited state in these pigment granules.Supported by the Ministry of Education of Japan Research grant No. 234046.     

Percutaneous penetration of indomethacin.

14C-Indomethacin (ID) was applied to the skin of guinea-pigs as an ointment. After several applications, the concentration of ID in the skin and muscle under the applied site reached a constant level. The concentration of ID in the muscle as well as the skin may be enough to exert an anti-inflammatory effect.
