Schrödinger and Dirac equations for the hydrogen atom, and Laguerre polynomials

It is usually claimed that the Laguerre polynomials were popularized by Schrödinger when creating wave mechanics; however, we show that he did not immediately identify them in studying the hydrogen atom. In the case of relativistic Dirac equations for an electron in a Coulomb field, Dirac gave only approximations, Gordon and Darwin gave exact solutions, and Pidduck first explicitly and elegantly introduced the Laguerre polynomials, an approach neglected by most modern treatises and articles. That Laguerre polynomials were not very popular before their use in quantum mechanics, probably because they had been little used in classical mathematical physics, is confirmed by the fact that, as we show, they had been rediscovered independently several times during the nineteenth century, in published or unpublished studies of Abel, Murphy, Chebyshev, and Laguerre.     

Gene polymorphism in Netherton and common atopic disease.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and asthma are characterized by IgE-mediated atopic (allergic) responses to common proteins (allergens), many of which are proteinases. Loci influencing atopy have been localized to a number of chromosomal regions, including the chromosome 5q31 cytokine cluster. Netherton disease is a rare recessive skin disorder in which atopy is a universal accompaniment. The gene underlying Netherton disease (SPINK5) encodes a 15-domain serine proteinase inhibitor (LEKTI) which is expressed in epithelial and mucosal surfaces and in the thymus. We have identified six coding polymorphisms in SPINK5 (Table 1) and found that a Glu420-->Lys variant shows significant association with atopy and AD in two independent panels of families. Our results implicate a previously unrecognized pathway for the development of common allergic illnesses.     

Beta-catenin/TCF4 transactivates miR-30e during intestinal cell differentiation

The Wnt/beta-catenin/TCF4 pathway plays critical roles in the maintenance of small intestinal epithelium; however, downstream targets of the beta-catenin/TCF4 complex are not extensively characterized. We identified miR-30e as an immediate target activated by the beta-catenin/TCF4 complex. miR-30e was detected in the peri-nuclear region of the intestinal crypt IEC-6 cells. Bioinformatics analysis revealed clustered beta-catenin/TCF4 binding sites within the miR-30e promoter region. This promoter region was cloned into pGL3-control luciferase reporter vector, with the enhancer region removed. Transfection of pCMV-SPORT6-beta-catenin expression vector dose-dependently increased luciferase activity, and co-transfection of pCMV-SPORT6-TCF4 expression vector further enhanced the promoter activity. Dexamethasone-induced IEC-6 cells differentiation caused a 2.5-fold increase in miR-30e expression, and upon beta-catenin siRNA transfection, miR-30e increased 1.3-fold. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay confirmed the binding between beta-catenin/TCF4 complexes from IEC-6 nuclear extracts and the putative sequences in the miR-30e promoter. These results demonstrate that beta-catenin/TCF4 transactivates miR-30e during intestinal cell differentiation.     

Chemistry of ion coordination and hydration revealed by a K+ channel-Fab complex at 2.0 A resolution.

Ion transport proteins must remove an ion's hydration shell to coordinate the ion selectively on the basis of its size and charge. To discover how the K+ channel solves this fundamental aspect of ion conduction, we solved the structure of the KcsA K+ channel in complex with a monoclonal Fab antibody fragment at 2.0 A resolution. Here we show how the K+ channel displaces water molecules around an ion at its extracellular entryway, and how it holds a K+ ion in a square antiprism of water molecules in a cavity near its intracellular entryway. Carbonyl oxygen atoms within the selectivity filter form a very similar square antiprism around each K+ binding site, as if to mimic the waters of hydration. The selectivity filter changes its ion coordination structure in low K+ solutions. This structural change is crucial to the operation of the selectivity filter in the cellular context, where the K+ ion concentration near the selectivity filter varies in response to channel gating.     

Attributes associated with probability of infestation by the pi?on ips, Ips confusus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), in pi?on pine, Pinus edulis

We examined attributes of pi?on pine ( Pinus edulis ) associated with the probability of infestation by pi?on ips ( Ips confuses ) in an outbreak in the Coconino National Forest, Arizona. We used data collected from 87 plots, 59 infested and 28 uninfested, and a logistic regression approach to estimate the probability of infestation based on plot and tree-level attributes. Pi?on pine stand density index was a good predictor of the likelihood of infestation by pi?on ips at the plot level, and a cross-validation analysis confirmed that the model correctly classified 82% of the cases. Diameter at root collar and pi?on dwarf mistletoe infestation level were good predictors of individual tree infestation, and a cross-validation analysis indicated that the model correctly classified 72% of the cases. Results suggest that the occurrence of pi?on ips infestations may be related to stress factors associated with increased stocking and pi?on dwarf mistletoe infestations.     

Role of serum components in the binding and phagocytosis of oxidatively damaged erythrocytes by autologous mouse macrophages

To investigate the role of autologous serum components in the recognition of damaged cells by macrophages, we examined the binding and phagocytosis of damage oxidatively damaged red blood cells with Cu2+ and ascorbate (oxRBCs) by autologous resident mouse peritoneal macrophages. The binding of oxRBCs by macrophages was independent of the presence of serum. However, phagocytosis by macrophages increased with serum concentration, and macrophages showed little ingestion of oxRBCs in a serum-free medium. Macrophages neither bound nor appreciably ingested native RBCs (before oxidation) in either the absence or presence of autologous serum. Mouse macrophages ingested significantly more native as well as oxRBCs in the presence of heat-inactivated fetal calf serum than in the presence of heat-inactivated mouse serum. Pretreated oxRBCs with normal serum were rarely ingested by macrophages in a serum-free medium. Phagocytosis of oxRBCs was significantly inhibited by depletion of IgG or calcium from serum, by heat inactivation of complement, or by antiserum against mouse C3. These results demonstrate that serum components such as IgG, C3, and calcium are involved in phagocytosis of oxRBCs by autologous macrophages.
