Evidence for mantle plumes?

Geophysical hotspots have been attributed to partially molten asthenosphere, fertile blobs, small-scale convection and upwellings driven by core heat. Most are short-lived or too close together to be deeply seated, and do not have anomalous heat flow or temperature; many are related to tectonic features. Bourdon et al. investigate the dynamics of mantle plumes from uranium-series geochemistry and interpret their results as evidence for thermal plumes. Here we show why alternative mechanisms of upwelling and melting should be considered.     

Mediators of vascular remodelling co-opted for sequential steps in lung metastasis

Metastasis entails numerous biological functions that collectively enable cancerous cells from a primary site to disseminate and overtake distant organs. Using genetic and pharmacological approaches, we show that the epidermal growth factor receptor ligand epiregulin, the cyclooxygenase COX2, and the matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 2, when expressed in human breast cancer cells, collectively facilitate the assembly of new tumour blood vessels, the release of tumour cells into the circulation, and the breaching of lung capillaries by circulating tumour cells to seed pulmonary metastasis. These findings reveal how aggressive primary tumorigenic functions can be mechanistically coupled to greater lung metastatic potential, and how such biological activities may be therapeutically targeted with specific drug combinations.     

A rule-based model for mapping potential exotic plant distribution

Wildland managers need a method to predict which portions of the lands under their stewardship are susceptible to invasion by exotic plants. We combined a database listing exotic plant species known to occur in major environmental types (habitat types) throughout the northern Rocky Mountains with a digital vegetation map of environmental types for a major national park in the region (Yellowstone National Park) to produce maps of areas potentially threatened by major exotic species. Such maps should be helpful to managers concerned with monitoring and controlling exotic plants.     

浅谈中职教师做个案研究

个案研究是对特定教育现象加以调查分析、弄清其特点及其形成过程的一种研究方法,最适合于教师研究,但在教学实践中教师却由于种种原因对个案研究重视不足.为了帮助教师在实践中有效运用个案研究,文章分析了个案研究的目的、意义和研究中应该注意的几个问题,以求对教师有所帮助.

本文系地矿部项目《苏皖北部上前寒武系研究》的部分成果并进一步深化而成,对著名的皖西凤台组砾岩进行了系统的岩石学研究,通过多方法,多因素综合研究,得出“凤台组属冰成岩”的结论,但又有它自身的特殊性,文中对此作了深入的论证并提出若干新的见解。
