Résumé La teneur en glutamine dans le cerveau des chatons nouveau-nés au cours de la maturation cérébrale est comparable à celle des animaux adultes. Les concentrations en acide glutamique et en GABA augmentent et vers la fin du premier mois postnatal correspondent au niveau des adultes.

Isotope-induced partial localization of core electrons in the homonuclear molecule N2

Because of inversion symmetry and particle exchange, all constituents of homonuclear diatomic molecules are in a quantum mechanically non-local coherent state; this includes the nuclei and deep-lying core electrons. Hence, the molecular photoemission can be regarded as a natural double-slit experiment: coherent electron emission originates from two identical sites, and should give rise to characteristic interference patterns. However, the quantum coherence is obscured if the two possible symmetry states of the electronic wavefunction ('gerade' and 'ungerade') are degenerate; the sum of the two exactly resembles the distinguishable, incoherent emission from two localized core sites. Here we observe the coherence of core electrons in N(2) through a direct measurement of the interference exhibited in their emission. We also explore the gradual transition to a symmetry-broken system of localized electrons by comparing different isotope-substituted species--a phenomenon analogous to the acquisition of partial 'which-way' information in macroscopic double-slit experiments.     

Effect of adrenalectomy and diet on the activity ofβ-galactosidase in the small intestine during the postnatal development of the rat

Zusammenfassung Die-Galaktosidaseaktivität im Rattendünndarm nimmt nachgeburtlich zwischen dem 15. und 20. Tag ab. Wird am 15. Tag adrenalektomiert oder wird Laktosediät verabreicht, so erhöht sich die-Galaktosidaseaktivität am 19. Tag um den mehrfachen Betrag als bei den Kontrollratten.     

Stilboestrol-induced depression of the antibody response

Résumé On a étudié l'effet du stilboestrol sur la formation d'anticorps contre de hématies de mouton chez les rats et les souris. Un traitement préliminaire au stilboestrol affaiblissait chez les rats et les souris la réponse exprimée en termes d'anticorps hémolytiques et agglutinants. On a montré que cet effet dépendait de la dose et de la voie d'administration de l'antigène. On discute brièvement les mécanismes susceptibles d'expliquer cette diminution.

The influence of phenobarbital on the glycogen concentration of rat liver

Résumé On a constaté qu'une injection du phénobarbital provoque la diminution de la concentration du glycogène libre de 34% et la diminution du glycogène total de 22,6% seulement 24 h après leur injection. La répétition des injections du phénobarbital diminue le glycogène libre respectivement de 36% et de 28%, le glycogène lié de 46% et de 27%, et le glycogène total de 41% et 24%.     

Reflection signature of seismic and aseismic slip on the northern Cascadia subduction interface

At the northern Cascadia margin, the Juan de Fuca plate is underthrusting North America at about 45 mm x yr(-1) (ref. 1), resulting in the potential for destructive great earthquakes. The downdip extent of coupling between the two plates is difficult to determine because the most recent such earthquake (thought to have been in 1700) occurred before instrumental recording. Thermal and deformation studies indicate that, off southern Vancouver Island, the interplate interface is presently fully locked for a distance of approximately 60 km downdip from the deformation front. Great thrust earthquakes on this section of the interface (with magnitudes of up to 9) have been estimated to occur at an average interval of about 590 yr (ref. 3). Further downdip there is a transition from fully locked behaviour to aseismic sliding (where high temperatures allow ductile deformation), with the deep aseismic zone exhibiting slow-slip thrust events. Here we show that there is a change in the reflection character on seismic images from a thin sharp reflection where the subduction thrust is inferred to be locked, to a broad reflection band at greater depth where aseismic slip is thought to be occurring. This change in reflection character may provide a new technique to map the landward extent of rupture in great earthquakes and improve the characterization of seismic hazards in subduction zones.     

Selective effect of noradrenaline on superoxide dismutase activity in the brown adipose tissue and liver of the rat

Summary Noradrenaline treatment results in a significant increase of superoxide dismutase activity in the intrascapular brown adipose tissue but not in the liver.     

Catalepsy produced by intraventricular injection of nicotine

Résumé La nicotine, aux doses de 1.0 à 4.0 mg, injectée par voie intraventriculaire à des chats non-anesthésiés, provoque la catalepsie, la sédation et la stupeur. Les signes de catalepsie apparaissent d'ordinaire 10 min après l'injection et disparaissent au bout de 40 min. L'application intraventriculaire de tétra-éthyl-ammonium potentialise les symptômes de catalepsie dûs à la nicotine.
