Lipoprotein lipase activator deficiency in very low density lipoproteins in rat nephrotic syndrome.

Marked urinary loss of lipoprotein lipase activator in experimental rat nephrotic syndrome may be partly responsible for its deficiency in plasma very low density lipoproteins.     

Role of intracellular calcium in promoting muscle damage: a strategy for controlling the dystrophic condition.

It is suggested that various muscle diseases and examples of experimentally-induced muscle damage arise because of a high calcium level in the myoplasm. When [Ca2+]i is raised experimentally in amphibian or mammaliam muscle by treatment with A23187 or caffeine, myofilament degradation follows quickly. Such a rapid action suggests the involvement of a sequence of proteolytic activity that is stimulated by a rise in [Ca2+]i. Ca2+ might either trigger protease activity directly or indirectly, or promote the release of lysosomal enzymes. A high [Ca2+]i in dystrophic muscle is believed to be the resultant of a sequence of events that is summarized in the figure. Suggestions are presented for different ways in which the steady-state position of [Ca2+]i might ultimately be controlled for the clinical amelioration of some dystrophic conditions.

3 experimentally distinct transverse relaxation components of the water in frog sciatic nerve are obtained by Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill technique. The relative weights of these components: approximately 29%; approximately 50%; approximately 21% fit well with water compartments in this tissue as revealed by previous methods.     

Effects of the antiprotease Trasylol on peripheral blood leucocytes.

Binding of the antiprotease Trasylol to human peripheral blood lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) was demonstrated at the ultrastructural level using an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. This also revealed endocytosis of membrane bound Trasylol by PMNs. Trasylol inhibited PHA- and ConA-induced lymphocyte stimulation, and was cytotoxic to unstimulated cells.     

Toxicity of Phytophthora infestans and Alternaria solani to chick embryos

None of the extracts and culture filtrates from growth of 9 races of Phytophthora infestans on living potato tissue and potato dextrose broth are toxic to chick embryos. Chloroform extracts of 4 out of 10 isolates of Alternaria solani grown on potato dextrose broth showed some toxicity to chick embryos.     

Permeability coefficients of the egg-case membrane of Scyliorhinus canicula L

The cleidoic egg-case of the dogfish appears to have a highly porous and permeable outer membrane, the pore radius being computed to be 13.6 A. It does not present any physiological barrier to small molecules and therefore constitutes an open ionic and osmotic system for the embryo. Being a porous protein membrane it may be of value as a model for molecular transport mechanisms.     

Preparations of human dopamine beta hydroxylase subunits and antibodies against these subunits (author's transl)]

The present study deals with the dissociation of human dopamine beta hydroxylase (DBH) in subunits with a mol. wt of 79,500, and the preparation of specific antibodies in rabbits. No cross-reactivity was observed between human DBH and antibodies against human DBH subunits.     

G-6PD loading of G-6PD-deficient erythrocytes

G-6PD-deficient erythrocytes were loaded during hypotonic hemolysis with G-6PD extracted from yeast. It was shown that enzyme was really trapped into red blood cells and remained functionally active.     

Effect of electroconvulsive treatment on serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activity in man

The activity of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase was measured in the serum before and immediately after electroconvulsive treatments. No significant difference was observed, suggesting that the seizures did not cause an increase in the peripheral sympathetic tone.
