Developmental characteristics of histamine methyltransferase and phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase of rat brain

Summary The specific activity of histamine methyltransferase of rat brain increases rapidly from the 16th until the 25th day of gestation (7 days after birth). The specific activity of phenylethanolamine-N-methyl-transferase shows a rapid incrase during the 1st and the 2nd week after birth, the adult values being obtained by the end of the 2nd week.     

Defect of incorporation of S in old Swan autoimmune mice thymus (author's transl)]

A diminution of the incorporation of radioactive S in epithelial cells of the thymus of auto-immune Swan mice is shown. This defect of incorporation seems to be in relation to a thymus deficiency.     

Are there 2 cholinergic thermoregulatory centres in rats?

Summary An attempt was made to replicate the conflicting previous reports of hypo- and hyperthermic effects of intrahypothalamically administered carbachol. Despite using the same coordinates, injection parameters, and strain of rats reported by others, only hypothermia was conclusively demonstrated. It was concluded that the cholinergic system mediates heat loss mechanisms in rats.     

(E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal: A component of the female sex pheromone of the spiny bollworm,Earias insulana (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Summary (E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal has been identified as a component of the sex pheromone of the female spiny bollworm moth,Earias insulana, by gas-chromatographic, electroantennographic and microchemical studies of abdominal tip extracts and entrained volatiles from female moths.This work was carried out under Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food licence HH 11599/139, issued under the Destructive Pests and Diseases of Plants Order 1965.     

The influence of homologous plasma and fetal calf serum on human lymphocytic cortisol metabolism

Summary The influence of a) tissue culture medium (RPMI), b) homologous plasma (HP), and c) fetal calf serum (FCS) on lymphocytic cortisol metabolism was compared to that of phosphate buffered saline alone. RPMI was found to enhance the conversion rate 1.71 times, whereas HP and FCS enhanced it about 3.2 times. Raising the temperature of the HP and FCS to 100°C before incubation reduced the enhancing effect to the level of that obtained with RPMI.This work was supported by The Israel Cancer Research Fund N.Y. A duration-dependent negative potential in the cichlid electroretinogram

Summary A negative potential can be evoked in the local electroretinogram of the cichlid fishCichlasoma octofasciatum by light stimuli of duration longer than 70 msec. This response superficially resembles the proximal negative response, but differs in some waveform components and dependence upon stimulus configuration and duration.
