Kinetics of division in PHA-stimulated pig lymphocytes

Our results indicate that pig lymphocytes in culture complete their 1st division at 24 h. At 36 h there are 9% of cells in 2nd division. 3rd mitosis appears at 48 h; and at 72 h there are cells engaged in the 4th division.     

The Observer Effect

Founding our analysis on the Geneva-Brussels approach to the foundations of physics, we provide a clarification and classification of the key concept of observation. An entity can be observed with or without a scope. In the second case, the observation is a purely non-invasive discovery process; in the first case, it is a purely invasive process, which can involve either creation or destruction aspects. An entity can also be observed with or without a full control over the observational process. In the latter case, the observation can be described by a symmetry breaking mechanism, through which a specific deterministic observational process is selected among a number of potential ones, as explained in Aerts’ hidden measurement approach. This is what is called a product test, or product observation, whose consequences are that outcomes can only be predicted in probabilistic terms, as it is the case in typical quantum measurements. We also show that observations can be about intrinsic (stable) properties of the observed entity, or about relational (ephemeral) properties between the observer and observed entities; also, they can be about intermediate properties, neither purely classical, nor purely quantum. Our analysis allows us to propose a general conceptual characterization of quantum measurements, as observational processes involving three aspects: (1) product observations, (2) pure creation aspects and (3) ephemeral relational properties. We also discuss the important concept of non-spatiality and emphasize some of the differences and similarities between quantum and classical/relativistic observations.     

Composition of epicuticular wax of rice,Oryza sativa

Summary The epicuticular wax of rice, varietyRibe, comprised n-alkanes, esters, aldehydes and free alcohols. The nalkanes contained 4 major chain lengths, C₂₇, C₂₉, C₃₁ and C₃₃. Triacontanal and dotriacontanal were the major aldehydes. Octacosanol comprised 89% of the free alcohols. The esters were mainly esters of C₁₆ to C₂₄ acids with C₂₂ to C₃₀ alcohols.This research was supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome.     

Nuclear division inNeurospora crassa during conidiation and germination

Résumé La différenciation conidienne deNeurospora crassa s'accompagne de divisions nucléaires dans les hyphes en constriction jusqu'à l'achèvement de la septation inter-conidienne. Dans les hyphes étroits conidiogènes, les figures mitotiques sont souvent très étirées et peuvent correspondre à un autre mécanisme de division nucléaire que celui, plus classique, des conidies en germination.

Serum-protidopoyesis in neonatally thymectomized rats develops normally

Riassunto In ratti timectomizzati alla nascita e seguiti per 2 mesi non si osservano alterazioni a carico del quadro sieroproteico: in particolare i valori delle-globuline e l'incorporazione di glicina-¹⁴C in tale frazione sono analoghi a quelli trovati in animali sottoposti a falsa timectomia. Pure qualitativamente simile appare la distribuzione dell'aminoacido marcato nel parenchima splenico e in quello epatico dei ratti di entrambi i gruppi.     

Orderly Arrangement of G-chromosome bands in interphase nuclei

Resumen En las preparaciones cromosómicas sometidas a digestion contripsina se observa que la mayor parte de los nucleos celulares muestran una serie de rayos oscuros que parten de la membrana celular y convergen formando un anillo. Esta imagen se hace presente en aquellos preparados que muestran bandas cromosómicas G y no se observa en aquellos casos con déficit o exceso de digestión enzimática. Estos hallazgos probablemente indican que las bandas G se hallan conectadas, ordenadamente, a la membrana nuclear durante la interfase.

Anti-arrhythmic properties of 1,5-dimorpholino-3-(1-Naphthyl)-pentane: DA 1686

Riassunto Il DA 1686, corrispondente al 1,5-dimorfolino-3-(1-naftil) pentano, è un derivato della naftalina ad attività antiaritmica come risulta dalle prove in vitro (orecchiette isolate di cavia) e in vivo (cani, conigli, cavie e ratti). Il composto è ben assorbito dopo somministrazione orale e viene escreto nelle urine non metabolizzato.
