Phase stability in high entropy alloys: Formation of solid-solution phase or amorphous phase

The alloy design for equiatomic multi-component alloys was rationalized by statistically analyzing the atomic size difference, mixing enthalpy, mixing entropy, electronegativity, valence electron concentration among constituent elements in solid solutions forming high entropy alloys and amorphous alloys. Solid solution phases form and only form when the requirements of the atomic size difference, mixing enthalpy and mixing entropy are all met. The most significant difference between the solid solution forming high entropy alloys and bulk metallic glasses lies in the atomic size difference. These rules provide valuable guidance for the future development of high entropy alloys and bulk metallic glasses.     

Synapse-like profiles in regenerating sensory nerve fibres of Herbst corpuscles.

During regeneration sequences of Herbst corpuscles, the synapse-like structures are described between pairs of non-myelinated sensory profiles. The probable significance of this unusual for sensory corpuscles finding is discussed.     

Plasma steroid and protein hormone concentrations in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and in normal men.

Serum levels of testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin were measured by RIA in patients with BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and in control men. The testosterone concentrations in the BPH group were significantly lower than that of the control group. Serum concentrations of FSH, LH, prolactin and estradiol, did not differ significantly in the 2 groups.     

Skeletal muscle capillary densities during reactive hyperemia

Reactive hyperemia was induced in hindlimbs of rats by occlusion of the femoral artery. Using fluorescein dye as a peripheral vascular marker, we observed that there was an increase in the number of flowing capillaries supplying the muscle fibres following release of the occlusion. The results indicate that the number of flowing capillaries is not dependent on the duration of occlusion (2-10 min).     

Serum cholesterol levels in a Nigerian population sample

Serum cholesterol was determined in 104 healthy Nigerians (57 males and 47 females). The average cholesterol concentration was 187 +/- 72.8 mg/100 ml (mean +/- SD) with a range of 60-480 mg/100 ml. Cholesterol levels were higher in males than in females and increased with age. Distribution of cholesterol level was generally skew to the left.     

Role of oxygen radicals scavenging enzymes in the protoporphyrin induced photohemolysis

Inhibition of superoxide dismutase by diethyldithiocarbamate or cyanide increases the rate of red blood cells lysis after irradiation in the presence of protoporphyrin IX. Catalase activity, which is decreased during the photohemolytic process, appears to be not essential for the lytic event. No relationship between catalase activity and hemolysis rate was found. Superoxide dismutase appears to prevent only in part catalase inactivation by singlet oxygen.     

Effect of hormones on adenyl cyclase activity of rabbit mammary gland in vitro

Ovarian hormones namely beta-estradiol and progesterone were observed to stimulate the activity of adenyl cyclase of the mammary gland from pregnant rabbit in vitro, unlike the lactating tissue where it was inhibited. On the other hand, non-ovarian hormones like hydrocortisone, prolactin and insulin did not have a similar effect on this enzyme.     

Chromatin fluorescence by pyronin staining

Human, chicken and mouse cells from different tissues show a bright red-orange fluorescence of the chromatin after staining with pyronin Y. The possibility that intercalation of the dye into double helical nucleic acids accounts for this fluorescence pattern is briefly discussed.     

Effects of cycloheximide on protein synthesis in human lung tumors, regenerating rat liver and hepatomas

10(-4) M cycloheximide (CHM) inhibits leucine incorporation to about the same degree in slices of human lung tumors, rat hepatomas, regenerating livers and normal tissues. At 10(-6) M, CHM has a more pronounced effect on tumor tissue and regenerating liver than on normal tissues. 10(-8) M CHM stimulates protein synthesis in normal rat liver slices.     

The effects of actinomycin D and chloramphenicol on the rat preimplantation embryos

Actinomycin D and chloramphenicol, injected in the rat on day 3 or 4 of gestation, induce embryolethality and embryotoxicity. These effects are revealed on day 5 of pregnancy by reduced number of blastocysts and by decrease of mean blastomeres number.
