The mucopeptide turnover in the cell walls of growing cultures ofBacillus megaterium KM

Zusammenfassung Die Zellwände vonBacillus megaterium, in der Vorkultur durch 2-¹⁴C Diaminopimelinsäure (DAP) markiert, geben im Lauf ihrer weiteren Kultivierung DAP in den metabolischen «Pool» frei. Ein Teil der freigewordenen DAP wird zu¹⁴C Lysin dekarboxyliert und erscheint in Eiweiss inkorporiert. Aus dem Verhältnis der Radioaktivitäten in der Eiweiss- und in der Mucopeptidfraktion wurde die Geschwindigkeit des Mucopeptidumsatzes in den sich vermehrenden Zellen auf 3–4% in der Stunde festgestellt.

Summary It is well known that after exhausting muscle work glucose (or saccharose) leads to quick recovery in man. Experiments on rats have shown that in adult animals 50% of all creatine is present as creatine-phosphate (CP). In old animals above 22 months, only about 25% is present as CP. Diets with a 50% glucose content lead in old animals, in rest, to 50% CP in the muscle. Also after exhausting work on glucose diet the restitution is so complete that about 50% CP is present. The main reservoir of energy for the restitution of muscle, ADP ATP, comes from the breakdown of CP. The problem may be discussed whether high glucose diet may be damaging insulin production by exhaustion.     

The level of noradrenaline in terminals and varicosities after the ligation performed in the sympathetic ground-plexus

Summary It is well-known that the ligation of nerve trunk induces an intensive accumulation of noradrenaline proximally to the ligation. A similar ligation, performed in the sympathetic ground-plexus, induces no changes in the segments of terminal fibres situated proximally.     

Effects of alpha- and beta-adrenergic blockers on the actions of noradrenaline on body temperature in the newborn guinea-pig

Summary The effect of NA injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle on T_c was blocked by alpha-adrenergic receptor blockers, but not by beta-receptor blockers, whereas the effect of systemically administered NA was blocked by i.p. administered beta-receptor blockers, but not by alpha-blockers.Acknowledgments. Calmodulin mediates melatonin cytoskeletal effects

In this article, we review the data concerning melatonin interactions with calmodulin. The kinetics of melatonin-calmodulin binding suggest that the hormone modulates cell activity through intracellular binding to the protein at physiological concentration ranges. Melatonin interaction with calmodulin may allow the hormone to modulate rhythmically many cellular functions. Melatonin's effect on tubulin polymerization, and cytoskeletal changes in MDCK and N1E-115 cells cultured with melatonin, suggest that at low concentrations (10^–9 M) cytoskeletal effects are mediated by its antagonism to Ca²⁺-calmodulin. At higher concentrations (10^–5 M), non-specific binding of melatonin to tubulin occurs thus overcoming the specific melatonin antagonism to Ca²⁺-calmodulin. Since the structures of melatonin and calmodulin are phylogenetically well preserved, calmodulin-melatonin interaction probably represents a major mechanism for regulation and synchronization of cell physiology.     

Foucault's interpretive analytics of power 1,2

In this paper an interpretation of Foucault's work on power is presented. One aim is to introduce this aspect of Foucault's work to the emerging debate on Critical Systems Thinking. Another goal is to clarify how Foucauldian discourse about power can be framed within the notion of “interpretive analytics” (a term that describes Foucault's work, conceived by Dreyfus and Rabinow). This metalogical thinking proposes that archaeological and genealogical dimensions are proper methods for the study of the History of Thought. The interpretive space of experience-in which knowledge, power, and self are the axes of experience-is presented as a comprehensive model of the critical task of the History of Thought. Foucault's work is analyzed according to this model. Two conceptions of power arise from this analysis: the first conception is a peripheral view of power which raises key questions that drive the second, microphysical conception of power. We then demonstrate how the latter absorbs the former. The microphysical conception is based on a nominalistic view, which raises issues about nominalism in Foucault's critical thinking. These are addressed at the end of the article.
